Volkswagen Touran 1.6 TDI (81 kW) Comfortline

Volkswagen entrenched itself in the hearts of Slovenes even when several decades ago guest workers traveled around our country on their summer holidays. You know, down is white, up is red, but I'm always a little nervous about the crowds on our roads. And while the more affluent guests from Central and Northern Europe baked well, we drooled over plump beauties, who at that time were more than inaccessible. Yes, more than today! Our theory of love for Volkswagens today can be confirmed by two examples: firstly, quite a few Volkswagen models are at the very top of the bestseller list, and secondly, when we have Wolfsburg on the cover, this magazine miraculously sells better. . But, thank God, at least we are not like the Brazilians who en masse think that Volkswagen is just their business. We have Renault or the good old Revoz, but lately we prefer to leave the production of other brands to the Slovaks.

Hmm... Touran is not Golf, but it is close enough (to the heart) of fathers who love German quality and durability. This is not a generalization, but once again a fact that catches the eye when looking at the prices of used Volkswagens. The new Touran was not a design revolution as it looks like the designers were just sharpening pencils and imitating the touches of the new tin brothers from Wolfsburg. We will say that nothing is wrong, but nevertheless, from the point of view of the Italian College of Design, there is no excess. Much better in the interior, where the space can be easily adapted to current desires or needs. Three separate seats in the second row are movable in the longitudinal direction, and besides, they are well regulated, so, believe me, the 743-liter trunk will not leave anyone indifferent. We were also very pleased with two additional equipment, LED lighting with Light Assist function and the so-called trunk package.

Full lighting with LED technology and an assistant that automatically switches between dim and high beams is worth the 1.323 euros as it turns night into day and the road into a well-lit airport. The only slight annoyance is the lag, as I would have turned on the headlights several times earlier than the computer, but the system is still good and therefore comfortable. The second all-in-one costs just € 168 and includes a mounting grille, which can be adjusted using two rails on the sides of the boot, and a luggage compartment light with a portable lamp. A good idea for anyone who is worried about moving luggage around the trunk while driving. Aren't we all like that? Apart from the large center screen, which we have praised many other Volkswagen Group vehicles for its ease of use and connectivity to all new intuitive phones, we were surprised at the amount of storage space.

We're just listing the most important things around the driver: two boxes under the roof, a closed box at the top of the center console, space between the front seats, a closed box in front of the passenger, holes in the doors... If my memory serves me, this car has 47 storage spaces. frankly, a bit of apprehension as it would take at least half an hour to get the item back into my hands. Jokes aside, we have nothing to complain about in terms of ergonomics or quality, let alone usability. Here the Touran also shines in the new version. During testing, we had a version with a 1,6-liter turbodiesel engine that produces 81 kilowatts or more of the domestic 110 "horsepower". In principle, this is a good choice if low fuel consumption is your first requirement on the list when buying a new car. In the test, we used only 6,2 liters per 100 kilometers, on a normal circle on various roads with traffic rules and a quiet ride, only 4,6 liters. This time we won't discuss the Volkswagen software which shows different than real data as other newspapers, TV channels and websites are already full of this story, but we will say that our consumption has been verified. And it's easy to travel 1.100 kilometers with just one charge!

Interestingly, at first the Touran felt a little rough in terms of driving and engine noise, but then I got used to it, but when I switched to a direct competitor with a gasoline engine, I can confirm without remorse that it could be a little more refined. Some of that stiffness is provided by the engine, a slightly shorter first gear, and it is a bit uncomfortable to drive very slowly in second gear during morning rush hour too, when the turbocharger isn't helping the engine yet. modest displacement. Nothing shocking, but the fact is that the two-liter brother rides better.

Although the test Touran was fitted with a more modest one, among the accessories it had exactly what should be tested first. In addition to the already mentioned LED and Trunk packages, it also had 16-inch aluminum wheels, a Discover Media system with navigation, and a classic spare wheel. The possibilities for improving your well-being in this car, of course, are much more, if you can afford it. Also thanks to the new MQB platform, the new Touran is 62 kilograms lighter than its predecessor, 13 centimeters longer and with a wheelbase that has increased by 11,3 centimeters. Then you are surprised that when we met the former Sharan in the parking lot, we only scratched the back of the head, since they are roughly separated only by different heights. If the beginner still had a sliding door, it would be difficult to separate them from afar and from the side.

Overall rating (335/420)

  • We'll leave the evaluation of the new design to everyone's discretion to confirm that the 1,6-liter turbodiesel is very fuel efficient. When it comes to hardware, you know how it works: the more (money) you give, the more you have. It is a pity that the new Touran does not have the ability to slide the rear side doors, which is especially important in parking lots.

  • Exterior (13/15)

Undoubtedly a real Volkswagen, we would even say Volkswagen. Some competitors have very useful sliding rear doors.

  • Interior (101/140)

Spacious enough for family needs, it loses a few points with more modest equipment, gains slightly from the heating, which also works specifically for the rear passengers.

  • Engine, transmission (52

    / 40)

The engine is typical of small turbocharged engines, a suitable gearbox and a predictable chassis.

  • Driving performance (58

    / 95)

The road position is good, but not great, and the braking and directional feel instills confidence.

  • Performance (25/35)

With this engine, the Touran is not a sportsman, but it is agile enough for modern traffic flows.

  • Security (35/45)

Good passive safety, and the test car was modestly equipped with assistive systems (and they are on the accessory list).

  • Economy (51/50)

Very average warranty, slightly higher price, little loss of value when selling a used car.
