Volvo Cars and China Unicom agree

They will work together to research, develop and test 5G automotive applications.

Volvo Cars and China Unicom, a leading telecommunications company, join forces to create the next-generation 5G mobile technology for communication between cars and infrastructure in China.

Both companies agreed to jointly research, develop and test 5G automotive applications and the newly developed “Car for Everything” (V2X) technology.

The fifth generation of 5G mobile technology is many times faster, has more storage space and offers more efficient response times than previous 4G technology. High-speed data transfer to and from the car allows you to run more automotive applications.

Volvo Cars and China Unicom are exploring a range of different 5G applications between automobiles and infrastructure in China, identifying potential improvements in areas such as safety, sustainability, user friendliness, and autonomous driving.
For example, providing information related to road conditions, repairs, traffic, traffic jams and accidents helps the car take preventative measures, such as delays or suggest a different route. This can increase safety, avoid movement and increase energy efficiency.

Another example is the ability for cars to more easily find free parking spaces with the help of road cameras. In addition, vehicles can communicate with both traffic lights to set the optimal speed and create the so-called. "Green Wave" and each other, in order to safely enter and exit motorways and traffic on them.

“Volvo is a leader in unlocking and developing the potential to connect our vehicles, finding opportunities to create new features and services such as detecting and sharing information between vehicles on slippery sections of the route they are driving,” says Henrik. Green, Technical Director of Volvo Cars. “Thanks to 5G, network performance improves and enables much greater real-time service delivery. They can help the driver to travel safer and more enjoyable. We are excited to partner with China Unicom to develop these services for the Chinese market.”

Liang Baojun, vice president of China Unicom Group, added: “As an innovation leader in 5G, China Unicom is committed to building new information infrastructure and intelligent internet solutions that provide a great user experience. 5G will enable the development of autonomous driving, improve driving safety and bring new experiences by creating an end-to-end service system for "people, vehicles, roads, networks and cloud systems." We believe that China Unicom and Volvo Cars will work well together to pave the way for business development in the context of China's national conditions, which is expected to become an industrial model for China. “

5G is currently being introduced in major cities of China with the support of China Unicom and other companies. It is expected that China, like most regions, will widely apply its own standards for the so-called “car for everything” (V2X) technologies.

Volvo Cars' partnership with China Unicom helped the Swedish brand prepare for regional requirements and build a strong V2X presence in its largest market. Volvo Cars plans to introduce 5G connectivity as part of a new generation of Volvo cars based on the next generation SPA2 architecture.
