Provides safe handling of autonomous vehicles in heavy traffic conditions

Volvo Cars and Luminar, a leading autonomous vehicle technology startup, showcase the latest LiDAR sensor technology at Los Angeles Automobility LA 2018. The development of LiDAR technology, which uses pulsed laser signals to detect objects, is a critical element in building safe autonomous vehicles .

The innovation allows autonomous vehicles to move safely in heavy traffic and receive signals over longer distances and at higher speeds. Technologies such as LiDAR can help Volvo Cars realize its vision of autonomous travel, introduced in the 360c concept earlier this year.

The development of advanced LiDAR technologies is one of the many ways Volvo Cars is working with its partners to safely introduce fully autonomous vehicles. New signal acquisition capabilities, developed jointly by Luminar and Volvo Cars, allow the vehicle system to recognize in detail the various positions of the human body, including distinguishing legs from hands - something that has never been possible with sensors of this type. The technology will be able to detect objects at a distance of up to 250 m - a range far greater than any other current LiDAR technology.

“Autonomous technologies will take safe driving to a new level beyond human capabilities. This safety promise explains why Volvo Cars wants to be the leader in autonomous driving. Ultimately, this technology will bring many new benefits to our customers and society as a whole,” said Henry Green, vice president of research and development at Volvo Cars.

“Luminar shares our commitment to bringing these benefits to life, and the new technology is the next major step in that process.”

“The Volvo Cars R&D team is advancing at an impressive pace to solve the most important challenges in developing autonomous driving that will remove the driver from the workflow and ultimately enable autonomous technology to be implemented in real consumer vehicles.” , asks Austin Russell, Luminar's pioneer and CEO.

Earlier this year, Volvo Cars entered into an agreement with Luminar through the Volvo Cars Tech Fund, which funds technology startups with great potential. The fund's first technology program deepens Volvo Cars' collaboration with Luminar to develop and test their sensor technology in Volvo vehicles.

This September, Volvo Cars unveiled the 360c concept, a complete vision of a future where travel is autonomous, electric, connected and safe. The concept presents four possibilities for using an autonomous vehicle - as a place to sleep, as a mobile office, as a living room and as a place for entertainment. All of these possibilities are completely reimagining the way people travel. 360c also introduces a proposal to implement a global standard for secure communications between autonomous vehicles and other road users.

There will be a special venue at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show to showcase 360 models and the vision of autonomous travel in virtual reality.
