Innovation is standard on all new Volvo cars from 2021

Volvo Cars is introducing a special Care Key that allows Volvo customers to limit the maximum speed when renting a car to family or friends. The Care Key will become standard equipment on all new Volvo vehicles from model year 2021.

Care Key allows drivers to limit the maximum speed before handing over the vehicle to another family member or to younger and inexperienced drivers such as teenagers who have just got their driver's license. Earlier this month, Volvo Cars announced that it would reduce the top speed of all new 180 models to 2020 km / h as a kind of signal to the public about the danger of speeding.

Volvo Cars President Hakan Samuelson announced that the Swedish company wants to initiate a discussion on whether car manufacturers should have the right and perhaps even the obligation to install technologies that change driver behavior. Now that such technology is available, this topic becomes even more important.

Top Speed Limit and Care Key technology demonstrate how automakers can take an active role in the pursuit of zero deaths by encouraging change in road driver behavior.

“We believe that car manufacturers have a responsibility to improve road safety,” said Hakan Samuelson.

“Our recently announced top speed limit is in line with this mindset, and Care Key technology is another example. Many people want to share their car with friends or family members but don't feel comfortable in terms of road safety. Care Key offers them a good solution and extra peace of mind.

In addition to the potential safety benefits, speed limits and Care Key technologies can also provide drivers with financial benefits. The company is now inviting insurance companies from several markets to discuss options for special, better deals for Volvo customers using the safety technologies under consideration. The exact terms of insurance will depend on the circumstances of each market, but Volvo is expected to announce the first in a series of agreements with insurance companies soon.

“If we can encourage smarter driver behavior with technology that helps them avoid possible problems on the road, this will logically have a positive impact on insurance policies,” added Samuelson.
