Climbing hills in winter. What to remember?

Climbing hills in winter. What to remember? In winter, it is not necessary to go to the mountains to experience problems climbing a steep hill. An already icy or snowy exit from the underground garage can be a problem. Renault Driving School instructors explain how to deal with this.

Heavy snowfall or surface icing associated with freezing rain is always a challenge for drivers, but these conditions can be a problem, especially when climbing a hill.

In some cases the road is so slippery that we cannot get off the ground.

If necessary, we can put rubber mats removed from the machine under the drive wheels or pour sand under the wheels, if we have it. In this way, tire grip will increase and it will be easier to move off, instructors from the Renault Driving School say.

We are in a slightly better position to climb the hill when our car is already moving. This can help to pick up speed earlier and prevent the wheels from spinning. We should choose the right gear and skillfully manipulate the gas.

If the vehicle's wheels spin when climbing a hill, reduce throttle pressure but try to keep the vehicle moving if possible. On steep slopes and slippery surfaces, restarting can be a big problem. It should also be remembered that when driving uphill, the front wheels should be directed straight ahead if possible. This provides better traction, says Adam Bernard, director of training at the Renault Driving School.

It should not be forgotten that winter tires in good condition are an absolute guarantee of safe driving in winter. Although the minimum tread depth in Poland is 1,6 mm, these tire parameters are far from sufficient. The recommended thickness of winter tires is at least 4 mm.
