Lara Croft is one of the few PC game characters that has become recognizable to a much larger group of recipients. Lara's latest incarnation is the character played by Alicia Vikander in Tomb Raider. We can watch the movie on DVD and Blu-ray discs. What path did the famous archaeologist take?

The first game in the Tomb Raider series appeared in 1996, but it was in development for three years. The hero was supposed to become a man like Indiana Jones, but the authorities wanted something more original - the chief designer Toby Gard chose a strong woman, because there were very few such characters in the world of games.

Lara Cruz lost to Lara Croft

The players were close to meeting Laura Cruz, the tough South American adventurer; eventually the publisher forced them to change something that sounded better to the British audience. Lara Croft was "borrowed" from the phone book and appeared on the screens of the players for years. The appearance of the heroine was inspired by the style of two characters: the Swedish singer Nene Cherry and the Tank Girl comic.

Lara Croft, the daughter of a British aristocrat, a great archaeologist and adventurer, appeared in five games from the Tomb Raider series in the first 5 years of her existence, which sold almost 28 million copies - the creators were tired of doing the same, even decided to kill the maiden Croft in the fourth part of the game, in the fifth part the plot is based on memories. As the initial enthusiasm for the new brand and new heroine began to fade, Hollywood entered the scene.

From the game to the big screen

In 2001, the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie was released. To this day, it is the American actress who remains the most famous living embodiment of the heroine from the games. The film received a sequel in 2003, and both parts earned enough to continue to be considered one of the highest-grossing game adaptations. True, not a single production was 100% based on games - only the characters and the general atmosphere were borrowed - but thanks to this venture, Lara Croft received new recognition points.

And play from the big screen

After 2003, the series of games found new developers - the Crystal Dynamics studio, who decided to offer players a new look at the character of Lara Croft. As part of this second meeting with the archaeologist, three games were released, one of which was a remake of the original Tomb Raider. Then there was a 5-year break, after which it was time for a completely new discovery.

The series was relaunched in 2013 and introduced fans to the young Lara, who was yet to become the famous tomb raider. In September of this year, the completion of this new trilogy appeared on the market - the game "Shadow of the Tomb Raider".

Taking advantage of the newly discovered popularity of the famous heroine, the film business offered the audience to show two parts of the series, combined into one film. Alicia Vikander has become the new, younger and less experienced Lara. The film proved to be moderately popular, and there is nothing new about the sequel at the moment. Fans of Miss Croft's adventures should stay with PC games.
