Specifications for the revived GM Hummer brand have begun to emerge.

GM is resurrecting the Hummer brand in the most spectacular way, today confirming that its first product will be an electric truck, or ute, with power output and performance you can hardly believe.

Hummer will exist as a sub-brand under the GMC brand, with the first model now officially known as the GMC Hummer EV, and the American auto giant has called it the first step in its "quiet revolution."

But while the Hummer EV may be quiet, it won't be slow at all, as the brand promises performance figures that would make legitimate supercars look over their shoulders.

The brand has yet to elaborate on what exactly powers the Hummer, but it has promised 1000 hp. (745 kW) and 15591 Nm. Which is a lot. Enough, in fact, for GM to promise that its new EV truck will be capable of hitting 60 mph (about 96 km/h) in just 3.0 seconds.

The GMC HUMMER EV will be unveiled on May 20, 2020 and assembled in Detroit.

“GMC makes premium and powerful trucks and SUVs, and the GMC HUMMER EV takes that to the next level,” says Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC.

The Hummer EV may be GM's first push towards electric trucks, but it won't be the last as company boss and former Holden managing director Mark Reuss promises more all-electric trucks will come.

“With this investment, GM is taking a big step forward in realizing our vision of an all-electric future,” he says.

“Our electric pickup truck will be the first of several electric truck options we will build in Detroit-Hamtramck over the next few years.”

It's not yet known if the Hummer EV will make it to Australia at this time, but Holden has shown here that he's more than willing to play traditional American cars, including the new Corvette that will land in Oz, still with his Chevrolet badge.

So will the Hummer EV follow it to our shores? We'll have to wait and see.
