Accessories, the usefulness and importance of which cannot be demonstrated, turn signals are signal lights that must be on a motorcycle. They participate in our safety when we ride motorcycles. They are placed on the sides in pairs, i.e. 2 in front and 2 in back.

They allow us to signal our intention to swerve to the side of other road users. In view of Article R313-14 of the Road Traffic Rules, signs are mandatory on any rolling machine.

When both are on, we are talking about alarms. They indicate danger or damage. What types of turn signals are there? What are the criteria for choosing a turn signal? Review this article to choose your turn signals. 

Different types of turn signals

Whether indicators are essential accessories on a motorcycle in terms of performance, durability or beauty, they are even mandatory under the current texts. Any vehicle with faulty or inappropriate direction indicators is subject to a third class fine (€ 45 to € 450). We mainly distinguish two main categories of motorcycle indicators.

Classic turn signals

Classic motorcycle turn signals universal turn signals... These are indicators that have a light bulb inside. These direction indicators are most commonly used on two wheels and are often inexpensive. They can ride with all kinds of motorcycles and scooters. 

However, when buying, do not be tempted by the price, you need to take care to check the power of the turn signal in order to buy. The power of your new turn signal should be the same as the power of the turn signal on which the motorcycle was manufactured. In most cases, the wattage is either 10W or 21W, depending on your motorcycle or scooter.

The diameter of the screw shield must also match the diameter of the original turn signal. Conventional turn signals are not very aesthetic, which means they are used less and less. Indeed, we prefer other, more attractive and fashionable models.

LED direction indicators

LED turn signals are the direction indicators of the moment. This is the latest generation of turn signals. These motorcycle lights have several advantages. Really, their illumination is much greater than that of conventional indicatorswhich provides better visibility (about 10 times) for the motorcycle rider. 

Despite the fact that they have the ability to provide more light, LED direction indicators consume much less energy than conventional direction indicators. Therefore, they are economical in the long run. In addition, they have a longer service life. Indeed, they can last up to 30 times longer. With all these qualities, it is normal for them to be slightly more expensive, but in the long run they represent a worthwhile investment.

LED indicators are more suitable for the latest generation of motorcycles and scooters. The control unit for the LED indicator is electronic. So, if you want to change your classic LED turn signals on your old bikes, you will also have to replace the mechanical control unit with an electronic control unit or ask for a resistor to limit the power received by the LED indicators. 

Indeed, LED indicators allow for much less power than conventional ones, and if nothing is done to reduce this power coming from the mechanical control unit, the resulting blinking will be faster, which can damage the control unit. Moreover, it would be a direct violation of the law. 

What are the criteria for choosing a direction indicator for a motorcycle?

If you've ever wanted to buy direction indicators, it means that the ones you currently have on your car you don't like anymore or that they are out of order. So, before choosing your new direction indicator, there are several criteria you should pay attention to. 

Flashing type

Indeed, this is the first selection criterion. You must determine if it is the classic turn signal or the LED that you want. If you want to preserve the mechanical power of your motorcycle, the classic indicators are the easiest to choose. On the other hand, if you are interested in LED direction indicators, you will need a relay system to regulate the power supplied by said control unit.

Homologation

When buying turn signals, study properly. They must be approved so that they are not stopped on the road by a law enforcement officer.

Typically, depending on your two wheels, the wattage ranges from 10 to 21 watts. Therefore, it is necessary to find out what power the control unit provides (12 V / 10 W or 12 V / 21 W) in order to be able to adapt the corresponding indicators. If your choice has settled on indicators, the power of which is incompatible with the power of the control unit, then you must take an additional power control system.

Screw shield diameter

Whichever type of turn signal you choose, the diameter of the screw cap on the new turn signal must match the diameter of the old one. Measure last before buying. The easiest and recommended way is to use an old flashing beacon to make sure you don't make a mistake.

If your turn signals look old or outdated, that's a good thing, because they don't flaunt your bike. Next generation direction indicators not only perform better, they also look better. They give a new look to your two-wheeled vehicles. The new LED turn signals are more stylish and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. 

price

It is clear that this is an important factor, the determining criterion has always been the budget. You should know that quality comes at a price. LED turn indicators are better in quality but cost slightly more than regular turn indicators. They have a longer service life and better visibility. Conventional direction indicators, because they are tube type, give you the advantage of not spending a lot. So it's up to you whether you close your eyes and choose quality at the right price or prefer to use conventional fixtures at a lower price.
