The proper functioning of a motorcycle engine is highly dependent on regular oil changes. After a certain period of time, the oil should be replaced with an oil suitable for its characteristics and weather conditions. Faced with the many types of oil on the market, how do you choose the right one for you? This is what we will tell you in detail!

The value of engine oil for a motorcycle

If fuel allows the motorcycle to move, oil gives all its strength and gives it good functioning, Therefore, choosing a good, suitable oil is a very important point that should not be overlooked.... Before giving a few tips on choosing the right one, a brief summary of its usefulness is needed. Contrary to popular belief, engine oil has more than just a lubricating function. Indeed, by reducing friction, it lubricates, cools and protects the mechanical parts of the engine. It is also responsible for removing all contaminants and preventing corrosion of the interior surfaces of your engine. In fact, the power of the latter is preserved: the reduced coefficient of friction retains more force for the engine and significantly reduces the heating of the latter, and this is well known. a well-cooled engine provides the best performance!

Various types of motorcycle oil available on the market

There are many typesmotorcycle engine oil... Knowing its characteristics allows you to make a difference and make your choices better.

  • Mineral oilobtained by refining crude oil and improved by chemical treatment has the advantage of being inexpensive and covering the most common grades. Providing good engine lubrication, it is recommended for roads, old cars and very specific engines. Low speed engines often value these types of oils.
  • Synthetic oils suitable for high performance machines, latest engines or even frequently used machines. Its advantage is very good resistance to high temperatures and, unlike mineral oils, synthetic oils often have a chemical formula that is more resistant to strong mechanical stress. They have a chemical composition that includes molecules and are available in three quality options: hydrocracking, polyalphaolefins (polyalphaolefins) and esters.
  • Semi-synthetic oils obtained by mixing mineral and synthetic bases, they are very well suited for newly developed low thrust engines (modern Roadster engines), for vehicles used daily with frequent starts. These oils are in the middle of the price range and offer the best value for money with regular use!

How to choose the viscosity of your oil?

Once the nature of the oil is established, it will also be necessary to decipher its proposed viscosity index. Very often indicated on the container, the latter is presented in the FWC format. F for cold, W for winter, and C for hot. Oil with high cold class smoother and more efficient at cold start, Concerning hot variety, the higher it is in the oil, the more it can withstand high temperatures... For standard use viscosity 10W40 therefore will suffice, as opposed to competition or viscosity use 15w60 more suitable (apart from the imperatives of the manufacturers).

Successful use of your engine oil

Given its importance, the oil level should be checked frequently (approximately every two weeks). The age, viscosity of the fluid or its color will provide information on whether to change it. To drain properly, the motorcycle should ideally be flat, the oil filter should be replaced, and opening the filler cap will make it easier for the oil to drain. Likewise, be sure to warm up the engine for a few seconds before draining it. To avoid overpressure, the amount of oil must be sufficient (between Mini and Maxi) and not excessive! Finally, a smooth restart and warm-up time without aggressive driving will help your engine and clutch discs get used to the new fluid!
