The view of the drivers. Experts sound the alarm

The view of the drivers. Experts sound the alarm World Sight Day was a great opportunity to remind drivers to take care of their eyesight. And the data is scary. Almost 6 million Poles do not have vision correction, although they need it.

Regular eye exams are especially important for drivers. Until 2013, out of 20 million drivers in Poland, 85% had driving licenses issued for an indefinite period. – Eye examination of these people was carried out only once – before the issuance of the document. Following an amendment to the Law on Drivers on January 19, 2013, the maximum validity of a driver's license is 15 years, which means that mandatory eye examinations for drivers in Poland are still rare, recalls Miroslav Nowak, Regional Manager of Essilor Group in Poland.

– As our research shows, Poles neglect their eyesight, rarely check it, more than 50% of people aged 30-64 say they have their eyes checked every two years or less. This is a frightening statistic, especially if we combine it with the information that almost 6 million Poles do not correct their vision, although they need it, said Miroslav Nowak.

Therefore, special attention was paid to the importance of regular vision control by everyone, especially drivers, since the driver perceives up to 90% of information from the environment through his vision. Age is also an important issue, by around 2030 one in four drivers will be over 65.

- I'm ashamed to admit, but the last examination I had was in elementary school. I lived with the feeling that I was indestructible and that I could see perfectly. When I was invited to the action, I took part in it with pleasure and went to check my eyesight. The research was very professional and insightful. The result was very good - it turned out that I did not have any special problems with my eyesight. However, since I use smartphones, sit in front of a computer a lot, drive a car, it is worth wearing glasses with special smart glasses - they protect against the harmful effects of a computer or from solar radiation, they brighten or darken depending on the light intensity. I use them when I drive,” said Katarzyna Cichopek.

As part of the celebration of World Sight Day, drivers who were customers of the Statoil station in Warsaw at Puławska Street were ready to undergo an autorefractometer vision test. Such an examination lasts about 1 minute, and thanks to it, the subject receives information about whether he should contact a specialist for a complete eye examination and selection of a suitable correction. No one doubted that this kind of educational campaign is extremely important, because we are talking about our safety on the road.
