Laws and Permits for Disabled Drivers in North Dakota

In North Dakota, disabled drivers are eligible for permits that allow them to park in permanent or temporary disabled parking spaces. These permits are not automatically issued - you must apply for them and renew them periodically.

Summary of North Dakota Disabled Driver Laws

If you are disabled in North Dakota, you can apply for a license plate or sign that allows you to use certain parking spaces. They are not issued automatically; you must apply for them.

Types of Disability Permits

The North Dakota Department of Transportation offers permits and plates for the disabled, which:

  • irreversible and permanent
  • reversible and permanent
  • Temporary

You may use disabled parking if you are permanently or temporarily disabled. You are the only person who can use these places. Other people in your vehicle are not eligible.

Travels

If you are an out-of-state disabled person traveling within the state of North Dakota, you do not need to obtain a North Dakota nameplate or plate. Your state's license plate or poster will suffice, as North Dakota recognizes license plates and posters from other states. Also plates and posters from North Dakota are recognized in other states.

However, if you are traveling outside of North Dakota on a North Dakota permit, you must be sure to comply with any local laws and regulations that may differ from those in North Dakota.

Application

To apply for a disabled driver's license in North Dakota, you must complete an Application for a Mobility Impaired Parking Permit and mail or mail it in person. It should include certification from your physician or chiropractor, physician assistant or advanced practice registered nurse. If you require a temporary plaque, the fee is $3.00. If you request a permanent plaque, it's free. The license plate costs $5.00. To obtain a Veteran's Number, you will need to prove that you are fully disabled and that your disability is related to your military service.

Update

Your disabled nameplate or nameplate will expire and will then need to be renewed. Permanent plates need to be renewed every three years. Temporary plates are valid for three months. In the event of a permanent and irreversible disability, you will receive a notification in the mail that you need to renew. All you have to do is complete the form and return it to DOT North Dakota. You do not need additional verification from your doctor or other healthcare professional.

Lost or stolen signs and passes

If you lose your plate or permit, or if it gets stolen, simply request a replacement from the North Dakota Department of Transportation. Replacement costs $3.00. Mailing address:

608 East Boulevard Avenue

Bismarck, ND 58505-0700

Don't forget to include the plate number if you have one.

As a resident of North Dakota with a disability, you are entitled to certain rights and privileges when it comes to parking. However, these privileges are not automatically granted to you. You must apply for them.
