Laws and Permits for Disabled Drivers in North Carolina

If you are a disabled person in North Carolina, you are eligible for parking privileges that are not available to non-disabled residents. You can get special license plates and plates that will make your life easier. You will be able to park in places that are closer to buildings and use special parking spaces in public places such as shopping malls.

Your privileges

Disabled people in North Carolina can:

  • Park in places designated for people with disabilities as much as they want
  • Park in other parking spaces longer than non-disabled people

However, your privileges must not be abused - you cannot allow people without disabilities to use your special parking permits. If you allow someone else to use your special permit, you are breaking the law and may be fined or even have your permit revoked.

Permission types

In North Carolina, people with disabilities can get:

  • Permanent disability sign
  • Temporary incapacity plate
  • Permanent Disability License Plate

In addition to these permits, DMV in North Carolina also offers posters for organizations that regularly transport people with disabilities.

How to Apply

You can request a Disability Sign or Plaque by mail or in person. To do this, you will need to provide a document from your doctor stating that you are disabled. You will then need to complete an Application for a Disabled Parking Card (Form MVR-37A)] along with your government-issued ID.

Once you are approved, you will receive the plates along with a plate registration card that you are required by law to keep in your vehicle.

You can also get a special license plate. If you are applying for a disabled license plate, you will need to complete an Application for a Disabled Driver License Plate (Form MVR-37) and attach a letter from your optometrist or ophthalmologist along with your government-issued ID. This could be a driver's license, passport, or other government-issued ID.

Update

Any NC-issued license plates or plates with disabilities will expire at some point and will need to be renewed. In order to renew your special plate or permit, you must provide another letter from your doctor stating that you are still disabled. You must then apply for renewal no later than 90 days before the expiration date.

Lost permissions

If you lose your permit or license plate, or if it is stolen, you will need to reapply Ot MBP-37A and provide a medical certificate stating that you are disabled.

As a NC resident, if you have a disability, you are entitled to certain special provisions when it comes to parking. However, in order to use them, you must complete certain documents. The state does not automatically grant you these benefits - you must apply for them.
