Windshield Laws in Oklahoma

Motorists on the roads of Oklahoma know that they must obey many different traffic laws to keep themselves and others safe on the roads. In addition to the rules of the road, drivers are also required to ensure that their vehicles comply with the regulations regarding the equipment installed on the vehicle. Below are the windshield laws that drivers in Oklahoma must follow.

windshield requirements

Oklahoma has the following requirements for windshields and related devices:

  • All vehicles operating on the roadway must have a windshield.

  • All vehicles operating on the roadway must have driver-operated electric wipers capable of removing rain and other forms of moisture to provide a clear view and in good working order.

  • The windshield and all windows in the vehicle require safety glass. Safety glazing material or safety glass is made from a combination of glass and other materials that greatly reduce the chance of glass breaking or shattering on impact compared to flat glass.

Obstacles

Oklahoma also has regulations prohibiting a driver's view through the windshield.

  • Posters, signs, debris, and any other opaque material is not permitted on or on the windshield, side or rear window that prevents the driver from clearly seeing the roadway and crossing roadways.

  • Vehicles moving on the roadway must be cleared of ice, snow and frost on the windshield and windows.

  • Hanging objects, such as those hanging from the rearview mirror, are not allowed if they obscure or prevent the driver from seeing the roadway and crossing roadways clearly.

Window tinting

Oklahoma allows window tinting that meets the following requirements:

  • Non-reflective tinting is acceptable above the manufacturer's AS-1 line or at least five inches from the top of the windshield, whichever comes first.

  • Any tinting of all other windows must provide more than 25% light transmission.

  • Any reflective tint used on a side or rear window must have a reflectance of no more than 25%.

  • Any vehicle with a tinted rear window must have dual side mirrors.

Cracks and chips

Oklahoma has specific regulations regarding windshield cracks and chips:

  • Windshields with gunshot damage or star breaks larger than three inches in diameter are not allowed.

  • Do not drive on the roadway if the windshield has two or more micro cracks or stress cracks that add up to 12 inches or more if they are located in the driver's side wiper travel area.

  • Areas of damage or obvious tears that are severely cracked, leaking air, or can be felt with a fingertip are not allowed on any part of the windshield.

Violations

Drivers who do not comply with the above laws can be fined $162 or $132 if the problem is corrected and they present evidence in court.
