Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

If your Audi c4 started to fall asleep on the bumps and began to sway more and more in front of you, you may have run out of front shock absorbers. You can check them in the following way.

Turn in front of the car by pressing on one of the fenders and jerk your arms out to the side, if the front end wobbles a few more times, then know that the front shock absorber on the side that wobbled needs to be replaced.

Although this is not a Zhiguli, such a diagnostic method is suitable, perhaps this will be observed as a last resort.

Before proceeding with the replacement of the front shock absorbers, it is advisable to make a special key. Thanks to the key, the replacement of the front shock absorbers will be much faster and technically correct.

Making a special key is a simple process and does not take much time. We choose a piece of tubing with an inside diameter centered on the damper stem diameter of 25mm and a length greater than the fully extended stem length of about 300mm.

Rice. 1 - The length of the shock absorber rod.

And we also need a nut 34. Having drilled its inner part to fit the diameter of the rod, we grind one edge of the nut, we make a flat area. We weld a nut to the end of the tube with the other side. At the end of the tube, we drill a hole for the beard, so that it is convenient for us to turn the key, you can weld a nut on top and make it a turnkey or head.

At the time of removing the shock absorber, unfortunately, there was no time to make a key, or rather, the necessary materials were not at hand, but I did not take care of this in advance. Therefore, below I will describe the barbaric way to replace the shock absorber.

Remove the cover.

Rice. 5 - Chipping machine.

We remove the washer and the chipper itself. If it is broken, it will need to be replaced.

We look inside and see that ill-fated nut that needs to be unscrewed in order to pull out the front shock absorber.

Now to get to the nut we need to lift the front of the car. If we had the key, we wouldn't have to do this.

First, we are trying to attach a gas key. If we succeed, we try to unscrew the nut.

Rice. 8. Turn away a nut of the shock-absorber.

This did not bring me the desired result, so I had to resort to the help of a chisel and a hammer. Under such pressure, the nut could not stand it and in the end I won it.

By unscrewing the nut, you can remove the old and install a new shock absorber.

The photo of the old shock absorber was taken much later, which is why it looks so bad. In the photo we see that the shock absorber rod is lowered to the end and does not even go up, although in the previous photo of the new shock absorber the rod is at the top and if it is lowered down, then its original position is slowly accepted.

After the procedure, it is convenient to collapse.

Replacing rear pillars audi c4 vw audi skoda seat

The reason for replacing the rear shock absorbers on his Audi c4 was a strong roll of the rear of the car, especially when passing speed bumps.

Raise the rear of the car and remove the rear wheel.

Rice. 1 - Rear shock absorber.

To remove the rear strut, we need to unscrew the nut of the lower shock absorber bushing and remove the bolt.

Fig 9 - We tighten the spring.

Having unloaded the shock absorber, we must unscrew the fixing nut.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

Figure 10 - Shock absorber mounting nut.

To do this, we need a 17 socket wrench and a special key to hold the shock absorber rod, which you can make yourself.

To make a special key, we need a bar with a diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the tubular key, in my case, about 15 mm, in which it is necessary to make a cut 6 mm wide ..

The beam must be selected exactly on a turn-key basis, since a beam of a smaller diameter may not withstand the load. The first time I took a beam, about 10 mm, in the end I had to redo it.

We put everything in its place. First we tighten the top nuts, then we hook the bottom bolt. If you can't center everything at once, don't forget the jack we support against the beam to get the bolt out.

We tighten all the fixing nuts with a force of 25 Nm, if there is no key, you need to pull without fanaticism, you can easily break the fixing bolts.

How to replace the front spring, shock absorber Audi A6 C5

We won't pour much water into the introduction, but let's get straight to the point when it comes to replacing the front spring or shock absorber of the Audi A6 C5.

In winter, when it was very cold, one of the front suspension springs of the Audi A6 C5 failed and broke right in the middle. It turns out that the broken piece of the spring simply pressed the other half to the top.

  1. Because of the spring, or rather what was left of it, Audi noticeably sank and I had to drive out of fear of sleeping policemen and other potholes on the road.
  2. I was also very worried that the suspension would work under heavy loads and, in addition to the spring, it would also be necessary to replace the shock absorber, air spring, bump stop, upper and lower rack plates.
  3. Also, I had no idea what other parts and tools could be useful for repairs, so I had to rely on myself and new springs bought by Lesjofors (art. 4004236).

The process of replacing the front springs of the Audi A6 C5 (Audi A4 / Passat B5 / Skoda Superb)

Like any car suspension repair, it starts with getting the wheel off securely and stopping the car, not just trusting your life to a jack.

Once in the gift space, the first step is to unscrew the screw that holds the upper shock absorber arms.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

Be careful, this bolt is called "Hitler's Revenge" for a reason, because it gets very sour and can be very difficult to unscrew.

I recommend not to rush to swing the hammer, but first clean all the grooves, try to turn it and pour it abundantly with a liquid key. It is advisable to let the product stand for several hours or days.

After that, we screw the nut back so as not to damage the thread and remove it from the steering knuckle with translational movements.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

If, after perfect manipulation, the bolt does not give in, then, as an option, try heating the fist or drilling the bolt with a hammer drill (vibration vibration task).

Next, unscrew the bolt that holds the lower arm and shock absorber eyelet. There should be no problems, if it is attached with levers, then you will have to squeeze the lever or unscrew the anti-roll bar.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

Now we have to remove the upper levers from the steering knuckle, since the Audi has aluminum levers, it is not advisable to hit them.

I took a wrench out of the toolbox and removed the levers from the steering knuckle.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

The next step is to unscrew the three bolts on the frame bracket below the soot gap. True, for this I had to remove the plastic protection.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

After some trouble, the ear of the shock absorber did not want to come off the lower arm, but the mount helped, we removed the entire rack assembly and took it to where it will be repaired further.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

Anyone who removes a strut to replace a spring or shock, remember the 11 degree angle that the top mount must be in relation to the shock tab.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

Therefore, if you do not understand or do not know how the angle is adjusted, I advise you to put marks and take them into account during installation.

Next, unscrew the upper screws of the bracket and remove it together with the levers.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

For reference, I’ll say that if you also change the upper arms for an Audi A6, A4 or Passat, then keep in mind that the distance from the edge of the support to the arms should be set, in my case (I have an Audi A6 C5) 57 mm. For other models it may be different.

Replacing shock absorbers Audi 100 c4

Now you can proceed to the analysis of the shock absorber strut. To do this, pull on the spring or what is left of it. I used a couple of zip ties, there are many on the market.

  1. Next, you need to unscrew the nut from the bracket, which must be secured with a hexagon to prevent displacement.
  2. Since there was very little space, I had to use a head and a gas key.
  3. Then we disassemble everything, remove the nut, bracket, washer, trawl of the upper spring, stopper with anther, lower plate and the spring itself.

We inspect all parts for wear and tear and replace if anything is suspicious. Personally, everything was in good condition for me, and the new Chinese is no better than the original, so I just bought the springs. I checked the damper, it works smoothly and without jamming, so I didn’t change it either.

Then the most difficult thing begins, this is the rule of new springs. Since the front springs are quite powerful, they cannot be assembled with weak ties, you can be crippled.

I used two pairs of cable ties, plus I constantly secured with a rope, but I could not get the support nut.

Solved the problem with two more hands. The assistant, using improvised means, pulled up the shock absorber rod by 1 - 1,5 cm and that was enough to turn everything around.

Now that you can finally mount everything, don't forget to move the top spring plate 11 degrees from the shock tab so that the top mount sits properly.

Also make sure the spring is properly seated on the plates. It should rest against the ledges.

  1. At the final stage, we install the front strut back on the Audi and tighten all the bolts with the required torque N * m.
  2. Bolt tightening torques:
  3. Brake caliper to steering knuckle 120
  4. Screw for attaching the guide arm to the subframe 80 Nm and tighten by 90°
  5. Fixing screw of the clamping arm to the auxiliary frame 90 Nm and tighten by 90°
  6. Nuts of fastening of an earring of the stabilizer 60 or 100 Nm
  7. Screws for fastening the outer CV joints to the front wheel hubs 90 Nm and tighten by 180°
  8. Brake shield to steering knuckle 10
  9. Hinge nuts for levers above rotary knob 40
  10. Wheel bolts 120
  11. Coupling nuts on top of shock absorber 20
  12. Lower arms to steering knuckle 90
  13. Nuts of fastening of the lever of cross-section stability 25
  14. As for the lower arm, I’ll add that its bolt must be screwed completely, only on a car standing on the ground, so that the silent block of the arm does not fail prematurely.
  15. If someone did not understand the replacement of the front springs or shock absorbers on the Audi A6 C5, I highly recommend watching a detailed video.

In the video, everything is told as detailed and intelligibly as possible. I hope this is helpful to someone.

  1. At the end of the work, we put the wheel and check the result of the work, below you can see what happened before the replacement, and what happened to the gap after.
  2. Keep an eye on your cars and perform all the repair procedures yourself in the garage, because this is not difficult when there are so many repair instructions around.

Shock absorbers for Audi 100 C3 and C4 - what to put

The shock absorbers of the Audi 100 C3 and C4, although they have differences, have much in common. They differ, as a rule, depending on the suspension that the car is equipped with. Original shock absorbers for these vehicles are supplied by Sachs and Boge. By design, they are two-pipe racks filled with oil or gas oil.

Opinions on the quality and performance of these shock absorbers vary, but mostly positive. They are quite comfortable to drive, they feel confident on rough roads.

Front shock absorbers for Audi 100 C3 and C4

The front shock absorbers of both generations of the Audi 100 under consideration are not divided according to the mounting side, but differ in the type of vehicle suspension.

In addition, there were many more original items that were just official replacements or were intended for different regions.

On the Audi 100 C3, 2 types of suspension could be installed, and on the C4 there were already 3.

Although shocks with different article numbers were installed on each of the suspensions, they all have the same dimensions (in both generations) and are interchangeable. Significant differences can only be in the shock absorber gasket. So, for example, oil racks were installed on the suspension with the “bad roads” option, and diesel racks were installed on others. Otherwise, on C3 and C4 they are the same.

The original suspension struts for these cars are now practically not in demand. Firstly, due to the fact that the cars were produced for a long time, they are very difficult to find on sale, and secondly, the high price.

The table below shows the most popular analogues of the front struts. For the Audi 100 C3 and C4 and for all suspensions they are the same.

The rear pillars of the C3 and C4 also do not have a connector on the installation side, and, by analogy with the front, the position differed depending on the suspension. But they are the same size and are interchangeable.

But in fact, only the rear pillars of the all-wheel drive Audi 100 C4 (Quattro) differ. They come in different sizes and designs.

But the dimensions of the standard C3 / C4 and the “bad road” or “Sport” suspension are the same, so they can be interchanged, the main thing is that their stiffness is suitable.

Which shock absorbers for the Audi 100 C3 and C4 are better to buy

Kayaba shock absorbers will be the best in performance and quality. They have good handling and survival characteristics, relatively rigid.

As practice shows, the owners of the Audi 100 C3 and C4, choosing Kayaba racks, often prefer oil ones for the front wheels of the Premium series, and for the rear wheels - the Ultra-SR series. They are softer than gas-oil ones, more comfortable on uneven roads and are more similar to the original ones in terms of characteristics.

Slightly less popular are the diesel Kayaba Excel-G series. They are stiffer and more comfortable for fast and dynamic driving.

If KYBs aren’t affordable, Fenox shocks are the best choice. By the way, they are most popular among the owners of the "hundredths" of Audi. This is the perfect combination of price and quality. When choosing a Phenox, most drivers also prefer oil shock absorbers.

It is necessary to change the grilles on the Audi 100 C3 and C4, as in other places, depending on the degree of wear. On average, original shock absorbers live 70 thousand kilometers.
