Mazda antifreeze replacement

Antifreeze is a process fluid designed for the car's cooling system. Retains a liquid state at temperatures from -30 to 60 degrees Celsius. The boiling point of the coolant is about 110 degrees. Even a liquid such as antifreeze needs periodic replacement in a car. Therefore, the article will consider the process of replacing antifreeze on Mazda.

Coolant replacement process

Before proceeding with the process of replacing the coolant, you must first understand the signs of its need for Mazda 3, Mazda 6 GH, Mazda 6 GG, Mazda CX 5 cars.

Key Features:

  • special test strips are used to show the degree of antifreeze contamination;
  • antifreeze in Mazda 3 can be measured with a hydrometer or refractometer;
  • color change. For example, the liquid was originally green, and then changed color to rust. Also, discoloration, cloudiness, the presence of scale, chips, foreign particles or foam should alert.

How to drain antifreeze from Mazda?

Mazda antifreeze replacement

To drain antifreeze from Mazda 3, it is recommended to follow the instructions below:

  1. The engine is switched off and left for some time to cool.
  2. To drain antifreeze from Mazda 3, a container with a volume of up to 11 liters is placed under the radiator.
  3. To reduce the pressure in the system, carefully unscrew the plug of the expansion tank. It unscrews counterclockwise. If the cap is removed quickly enough, the high-pressure antifreeze can burn the face and hands of the captain or driver who decides to carry out the replacement procedure himself.
  4. There are two options for draining residual liquid:
    • Drain cock or downpipe. The lower tank has a drain cock that can be unscrewed to drain;
    • You can also use the down tube disconnect. A rubber hose of the appropriate diameter should be put on the beak of the drain hole, with which the spent coolant can be redirected to a specially prepared drain pan.
  5. After completely draining the antifreeze, you need to get to the cylinder block to drain the remaining fluid. To do this, you need to find the necessary outlet.

Complete flushing of the system

The state of antifreeze is determined by the owner of the vehicle or foreman. If it is too dirty, it is advisable to flush the system. Flushing the system helps to completely remove the protective layer of old antifreeze. This is necessary when switching from one brand of coolant to another.

To flush the system:

  • close all drain plugs;
  • fill the system with distilled water or a special flushing liquid up to the minimum level of the expansion tank. It will take up to 11 liters;
  • start the engine and let it run until it reaches operating temperature (90-100 degrees);
  • drain the liquid through all drain holes.

Antifreeze replacement

To replace the coolant in a Mazda car, you must follow the following step-by-step instructions:

  1. All drain plugs are sealed.
  2. New antifreeze is poured. It can be filled through an expansion tank or a special hole in the radiator.
  3. The engine starts for 5-10 minutes. In this case, you can manually bleed all the lines of the cooling system, leaving the cover of the expansion tank open.
  4. After starting the engine, check the coolant level in the expansion tank again. Fill in if necessary.
  5. At the end of the work, check for leaks.

Frequency of replacement of coolant in Mazda

Most automakers, including Mazda, recommend changing antifreeze every two years. This procedure prevents oxidation, especially if the welding of the cylinder head and radiator is made of aluminum. Although many advise against changing the coolant throughout the life of your Mazda, it still needs to be changed. There is no exact answer to the question of how often to change antifreeze. On the Mazda CX5, you can apply a special test or even determine with the naked eye.
