What is wheel bearing?

The wheel bearing is the connecting element that allows the hub to rotate on the axle. Without this important detail, a car wheel would simply not be able to turn, and it would be simply impossible to drive such a car.

Symptoms of a defective wheel bearing

The “dying” wheel bearing makes itself felt, as a rule, at high speed it manifests itself in the form of a buzz or creak, and a knock is also possible.

How to check the wheel bearing for serviceability

Method one. Checking a wheel bearing doesn't require any special tools, just be observant and know a few things. For example, while driving, you should turn off the music and listen to your car at speeds above 80 km/h if there is a dull noise near the wheels.

Then, after a long drive, check the tire temperature on the side you think is bad and compare it to the other side. If the temperature is different or the disc is too hot, it can be assumed that the wheel bearing is defective or the brake pads are stuck. If everything is in order with the pads and you are sure that the problem is not in them, then most likely the reason is in the bearing.

Method two. Raise the humming wheel or raise the vehicle on a lift. Then we take our hands on the bottom of the wheel and try to turn it. This is done to detect backlash, if there is any you will almost certainly hear a pop or pop. Both of these indicate a malfunction of the wheel bearing, as you understand, such a breakdown cannot be postponed, and if the wheel bearing is out of order, it must be replaced. Now you will learn how to do it.
