Mercedes 210 drive replacement

Removal and installation of the rear wheel drive shaft / Mercedes-Benz W210 (E Class)

SEQUENCE OF WORK

1. Remove the protective cap from the wheel.

2. Unscrew the 12-point hub nut (size 30) in the center of the wheel (Fig. 6.20). Since the hub nut is tightened with high torque, it is recommended that an assistant depress the brake pedal when loosening and tightening it.

3. Remove the left back part of system of release of the fulfilled gases.

4. Using a thin screwdriver, remove the dirt from the socket head differential bolts and remove them with the special tool (Hazet-Nr. XZN 990 lg-10).

5. Slide the unscrewed drive shaft and slide it out of the flange. This is easier to do when the axis is horizontal.

6. Remove the flanged shaft from the outside, perhaps by tapping lightly. If the shaft is too tight in the flange, a puller must be used.

7. If possible, do not install the car on the wheel with the drive shaft removed, as the lack of axial pressure can damage the wheel bearing housing.

8. Before installation, clean the contact surface of the shaft inside the connecting flange (Fig. 6.21). If necessary, remove the remnants of the fixing agent from the splines of the hub (Fig. 6.22).

Before installing, clean the knurled joint with a wire brush and apply some lubricant.

9. Install new bolts with an internal polygonal groove together with washers and tighten: with a thread diameter of 10 mm to a torque of 70 Nm, with a thread diameter of 12 mm to a torque of 100 Nm.

10. Lower the vehicle and install a new 12-point nut. For the sedan, the tightening torque of the nut is 220 Nm, for the station wagon (model T) - 320 Nm.

11. Secure the nut by bending the rings into the grooves on the drive shaft.
