Replacing the timing belt Mitsubishi Galant VIII and IX

The replacement of the toothed drive belt and a number of other elements of the Mitsubishi Galant timing system must be carried out in strict accordance with the requirements of the vehicle's technical characteristics. The parts that transmit torque from the crankshaft to the camshafts located in the cylinder head are subjected to significant loads in all operating modes of the internal combustion engine. Its resource, indicated in kilometers or months of service, is not infinite. Even if the machine does not work, but stops, after a certain period (for each model of the power unit it is indicated separately), it is necessary to carry out the maintenance prescribed by the engineers.

Service intervals specified by Mitsubishi (90-100 thousand km) should be reduced by 10-15% in cases where:

  • the car has a high mileage, 150 thousand km or more;
  • the vehicle is operated in difficult conditions;
  • when repairing, components of third-party (non-original) manufacturers are used).

Not only toothed belts are subject to replacement, but also a number of other elements of the gas distribution mechanism, such as tension and parasitic rollers. For this reason, it is advisable to buy parts not randomly, but as a ready-made kit.

Component selection

In addition to spare parts manufactured under the Mitsubishi brand, experts recommend using products from these brands.

  1. Hyundai/Kia. The products of this company are in no way inferior to the original ones, since the South Korean company completes some models of its cars with Mitsubishi engines manufactured under license.
  2. B. An authorized German company supplies the market with quality products at affordable prices. They are widely used not only in repair shops, but also on assembly lines.
  3. SKF. A well-known bearing manufacturer in Sweden also produces spare parts kits required for maintenance, which are no problem.
  4. DAYKO. Once an American company, now an international company, it has been operating in the automotive components market since 1905. This is a reliable and proven supplier of spare parts in the secondary market.
  5. FEBI. Parts manufactured under this brand are supplied to the assembly shops of world famous car manufacturers. For example, such as Mercedes-Benz, DAF, BMW. They are suitable for Mitsubishi Galant.

In addition to the timing belt and rollers, experts recommend changing the hydraulic tensioner. Remember that in the event of difficulties with the gas distribution mechanism, the Mitsubishi Galant engine is seriously damaged. Don't save money by buying parts of dubious quality.

Service should be trusted only to specialists of service centers with a proven reputation, and it is better, even when there is a good car service nearby with reasonable prices, it is preferable to replace timing units with Mitsubishi Galant with your own hands. DIY work:

  • saving money, and for used car owners, reducing repair costs is an important factor;
  • get firm confidence that the procedure is done correctly and you do not have to wait for unpleasant surprises.

However, it only makes sense to get down to business if you have certain technical skills!

Replacement process

Since at the time of replacing the Mitsubishi Galant timing belt, access to the cooling system pump is completely open, it is advisable to replace this part as well. The probability that the pump will leak or burst in the near future is close to 100%. To get to it, you will have to do the work already done earlier.

Tools

Regardless of the Mitsubishi Galant modification, to achieve the desired results, you will need a set of necessary spare parts and a good set of locksmith tools, which should include keys:

  • carob for 10;
  • plug straight for 13 (1 pc.) and 17 (2 pcs.);
  • socket heads for 10, 12, 13, 14, 17, 22;
  • Balloon;
  • dynamometric

Also you will need:

  • handle (ratchet) with extension cord and cardan mount;
  • screwdriver;
  • pincers or pliers;
  • a piece of steel wire with a diameter of 0,5 mm;
  • set of hexagons;
  • vise for working with metal;
  • a piece of chalk;
  • tank for draining the coolant;
  • penetrating grease (WD-40 or equivalent);
  • anaerobic thread lock.

The need for part number MD998738, which Mitsubishi recommends for tension rod compression, is not obvious. Ordinary vices do a good job with this task. But if you want to get such a thing, you just need to buy a piece of M8 stud 20 centimeters long in the store and tighten two nuts on one of its ends. You can do without the MB991367 fork holder, which the manufacturer suggests using to fix the crankshaft when removing the pulley.

It is more convenient to work in an elevator. Otherwise, you can limit yourself to a good jack and adjustable stand, although this will make some operations difficult. The sequence of actions is as follows.

  1. We put the car on the parking brake. If we use a jack, we put supports (shoes) under the left rear wheel.
  2. Loosen the right front wheel mounting bolts. Then jack up the car and completely remove the wheel.
  3. Remove the valve cover on the cylinder head.
  4. Discard the accessory drive belts. To do this, on the Mitsubishi Galant, you will need to loosen the alternator mounting bolt and loosen the tensioner roller on the power steering system. If the belts are to be reused, mark them with chalk to indicate the direction of rotation.
  5. We remove the upper part of the junction box, after unscrewing the four screws around the perimeter.
  6. Open the cap of the expansion tank and, having released one end of the lower radiator pipe, drain the antifreeze (if you are going to change the pump).
  7. We removed the side protection (plastic) located behind the right front wheel of the Mitsubishi Galant, and got relatively free access to the crankshaft pulley and the bottom of the timing case.
  8. Loosen the center pulley bolt. The easiest way to do this is to install a socket with a powerful knob, one end of which rests against the suspension arm. In this case, it will be enough to slightly turn the engine with the starter.
  9. We completely disassemble the crankshaft pulley and the lower part of the timing cover.
  10. Using an open-end wrench, we turn the left (front) camshaft towards the machine (there are special edges there) and put marks, the location of which will be described below.
  11. Slightly propping up the engine from the side of the removed wheel (on the Mitsubishi Galant this can be done with an ordinary jack), unscrew and remove the mounting platform from the power unit.
  12. Open the tensioner. We clamp it in a vise and fix it by inserting a wire pin into the hole located on the side (if the part is supposed to be reused).
  13. Remove the old timing belt.
  14. We unscrew the bypass roller.
  15. We replace the pump (there is no gasket, we put it on the sealant).
  16. We dismantle the old tension roller, having previously remembered how it was, and in its place, in exactly the same position, we install a new one.
  17. We put the hydraulic tensioner on the bolt. We do not linger, we just earn!
  18. Roller installation.
  19. We correctly put on a new belt (it should have inscriptions indicating the direction of rotation). First, we start the crankshaft sprockets, the left camshaft (in front of the car), the pump and the bypass roller. We make sure that the belt does not sag. We fix it so that the tension does not weaken (clerical clips are quite suitable for this), and only then we pass it through the sprocket of the other camshaft and the tension roller.
  20. We carry out the final installation of the tensioner.
  21. After making sure that the marks are correct, remove the tensioner pin.

After that, we return to the place all previously removed parts. Lubricate the pulley center bolt with an anaerobic threadlocker and tighten to 128 Nm.

It is important! Before starting the engine, carefully turn the crankshaft a few revolutions with a wrench and make sure that nothing is stuck anywhere!

Schematically, the location of the timing marks on the engines of this modification is as follows.

But everything is not so simple. Everything is clear with the camshaft gears - the marks on the gear teeth and the grooves in the housing. But the crankshaft mark is not on the sprocket, but on the washer located behind it! To see it, it is recommended to use a mirror.

Timing belt replacement for Mitsubishi Galant with 2.0 4G63, 2.4 4G64 and 4G69 engines

When servicing power units 4G63, 4G64 or 4G69, you will need to perform the same work as on machines equipped with 4G93 engines. However, there are some differences, the main of which is the need to replace the balance shaft belt. It can be accessed by removing the timing belt. Mitsubishi Galant will have to do it.

  1. Make sure the balance shaft marks are correctly positioned.
  2. Locate the installation hole located behind the intake manifold (approximately in the middle), closed with a plug.
  3. Remove the plug and insert a metal rod into an appropriately sized hole (you can use a screwdriver). If the marks are placed correctly, the rod will enter 5 cm or more. We leave it in this position. This must be done without fail so that the balance shafts do not change position during the following operations!
  4. Remove the crankshaft sprocket, DPKV and drive plate.
  5. Remove the tension roller and timing belt, and then install new parts in their place.
  6. Turn the roller to adjust the tension. When pressed with a finger from the free side, the strap should bend by 5-7 mm.
  7. Tighten the tensioner, making sure it does not change position.

After that, you can install the previously removed adjusting disk, sensor and sprocket in their places, remove the stem from the mounting hole.

Attention! If mistakes were made when installing the balance shaft belt, strong vibrations will occur during the operation of the internal combustion engine. It is unacceptable!

Replacing a timing belt on a Mitsubishi Galant 2.4 will require a little more effort than servicing cars with 1,8 and 2,0 liter engines. This is due to less clearance around the actuators, making it difficult to access parts and fasteners. You will have to be patient.

On a 2008 Mitsubishi Galant with 4G69 engines, replacing the timing belt is further complicated by the need to remove harnesses, pads and wiring connectors attached to the generator bracket and protective cover. They will interfere and must be handled with extreme care so as not to damage anything.

Below is a diagram for clarity, after reading it you can understand how the timing marks of the gas distribution mechanism and balance shafts are located.

This useful information will make life much easier for those who are going to repair the Mitsubishi Galant on their own. The tightening torques for threaded connections are also given here.

Regardless of the specific modification of the engine, replacing parts of the timing mechanism with a Mitsubishi Galant is a responsible task. You need to act very carefully, not forgetting to check the correctness of your actions. Remember, even one mistake will lead to the fact that everything will have to be redone.
