Timing Belt Replacement Mitsubishi Outlander

In the gas distribution system, the impeccability of the connecting link that synchronizes the camshaft and crankshaft is mandatory. Therefore, the timely replacement of the Mitsubishi Outlander timing belt is an important procedure. Periodically, the part must be checked for cracks and delaminations, because a breakdown threatens to damage the engine and overhaul.

It is advisable to update the timing belt or synchronizing element after about 90 thousand kilometers of the car or after 5 years of operation. It is possible earlier if there are doubts about the quality of the product. When broken, the valves bend on any Outlander engine. It is recommended to change the kit, as the failure of one element will lead to repeated repairs.

Chain or belt

Car owners are often interested in what is used in the Mitsubishi Outlander timing chain or belt. Depending on the modification and years of manufacture, the gas distribution mechanism of the Outlander can be equipped with a chain or belt drive. It will be possible to determine this by the appearance of the side cover of the engine, located on the side of the alternator belt. If the coating material is hard, iron (aluminum alloy), a chain is used. Thin multi-piece tin or plastic shields indicate a flexible, conventional timing drive.

The 4 liter 12B2,4 petrol engine is equipped with a timing chain drive. This is a 16-valve in-line aspirator equipped with a DOHC system. The crankshaft has additional balancer shafts that prevent vibration from the emerging centrifugal forces. These axles are integrated with an oil pump for greater compactness.

Timing Belt Replacement Mitsubishi OutlanderThe chain drive is quite reliable. The principle of operation is as follows: torque is transmitted from the crankshaft to the camshaft sprockets.

On the Mitsubishi Outlander DI-D, the alternator belt is also removed along with the main belt. It is important to check all mechanisms in order to replace them with new ones in case of a malfunction.

NTN is a Japanese company known for producing quality bearings and various automotive parts. Koyo has a long history of partnership with Toyota Motor Corp. The products of both manufacturers can be called original, since the parts of these companies are often equipped with packages with the Mitsubishi inscription. The client pays more only for packaging and more money, almost twice.

Tools and spare parts

Tools and parts needed to replace the Mitsubishi Outlander 2.0 timing belt:

  • belts - gear distribution, balanced;
  • tensor;
  • rollers - tension, balancing, bypass;
  • a set of keys;
  • Jack;
  • wrench;
  • screwdrivers;
  • heads;
  • necklace.

For your comfort:

  • remove the engine protection - it rests on the supports under the car;
  • raise the right front of the car on the jack;
  • unscrew the screws and remove the right wheel;
  • remove the wing and side elements preventing access to the distribution system; Timing Belt Replacement Mitsubishi Outlander
  • remove the protective cover from the crankshaft pulley.

Now we have to go to the engine compartment:

  • we unscrew the protective cover, under which both camshafts are located, it rests on 4 fasteners;
  • remove the power steering hose;
  • loosen the pump pulley while tightening the fixing tape; Timing Belt Replacement Mitsubishi Outlander
  • suspend the motor by placing it on wooden beams, handling the left pad carefully, as it easily deforms under load;
  • remove the pillow, rests on 3 bolts;
  • use a spanner or adjustable wrench to turn the belt tensioner counterclockwise, and fix the tensioner in the bent state with a curly screwdriver; if there is no screw, you can insert a drill of the appropriate size; Timing Belt Replacement Mitsubishi Outlander
  • finally disassemble the pump pulley fasteners and remove them;
  • remove the decorative engine cover with the Mitsubishi inscription;
  • remove wire shavings from the engine held in the ignition coils.

When replacing the crankshaft oil seal, loosen the crankshaft pulley center bolt. The easiest way to do this is by turning the starter, turning it on for a couple of seconds - fourth gear. Before that, you need to put a powerful key under the drive wheel of the car and insert it into the head of a suitable size (21-22M).

If everything is dry and the oil seal does not pass, it is enough to unscrew 4 additional fasteners from the crankshaft pulley.

Tags are set like this. The crankshaft rotates clockwise until the marks on the engine cover and camshaft gears match.

  • unscrew the intermediate roller of the drive belt;
  • disassemble the lower protection of the gas distribution mechanism;
  • unscrew the timing belt tensioner pulley;
  • remove the tensioner;
  • pull out the crankshaft gear;
  • remove the crankshaft position sensor (CPC);
  • unscrew the balancer shaft roller and belt;
  • pull out the timing belt pulley.

Installation is carried out in the following sequence:

  • put the bypass roller together with the bracket;
  • return the power steering pump to its place;
  • rotate the balancing roller, aligning the marks on the crankshaft pulley with the risks on the internal combustion engine;
  • put on the balancing belt and tighten;
  • finally tighten the balancing roller - a normally tensioned element should not bend more than 5-7 mm if you press it with your hand from above;
  • screw the DPK;
  • reinstall the gear and tensioner;
  • align the marks on the camshaft sprockets with the marks on the engine;
  • put on the timing belt;
  • Align the marks on the oil pump.

Be sure to check the marks on the second balance shaft or oil pump. We need to get under the car, find the spark plug bolt behind the catalyst. Unscrew it and insert a screwdriver or any suitable bolt into the hole. If there is more than 4 cm of free space inside, the marks are aligned correctly. If it sticks, turn the oil pump gear 1 turn and check again. Repeat until the bolt sinks more than 4-5 cm.

An incorrectly set oil pump mark leads to an imbalance in the balance shaft. This causes noise and vibration.

Plus:

  • ticks on other gears;
  • put the timing belt on the crankshaft and oil pump gear;
  • turn the roller to the right, achieving the initial tension;
  • finally tighten the timing belt screw and carefully remove the pin;
  • double check all labels;

  • put on the lower protective cover;
  • screw the intermediate roller of the drive shaft;
  • assemble the rest of the components and parts;
  • install the pump wheel, tighten it with bolts;
  • put on a hanging strap;
  • screw the removed engine mount;
  • check how the hinge element walks on rollers and pulleys;
  • install the upper timing cover;
  • put the covers back in place.

Well-assembled gas distribution system makes itself felt. Up to 3000 rpm, the operation of the engine is not noticeable, there are no vibrations and jerks. At speeds above 130 km / h, only the sound of wheels on asphalt is heard.
