Replacing the timing belt on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars

The frequency of replacing the timing belt of the engine gas distribution mechanism (timing) on ​​VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars is 75 km.

Many auto mechanics recommend replacing the timing belt a little earlier - 55-60 thousand km, since the quality of timing belts supplied as spare parts for VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 leaves much to be desired.

Also, every 10-15 thousand km it is necessary to inspect the condition of the belt for lubrication, the appearance of scuffs, breaks and cracks (see "Checking the timing belt"). We replace the faulty timing belt immediately, without waiting for the run. The procedure for replacing the engine timing belt with a VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 is not difficult, it can be carried out even in the field in a short period of time without special tools and fixtures.

Necessary tools, accessories, spare parts

  • key asterisk or head 19 mm;
  • Torx key, fixed key or 17 mm head
  • 10 mm torx or head wrench
  • wrench asterisk or head 8 mm
  • coarse slotted screwdriver
  • Special key for turning the tension roller
  • new timing belt
  • New tension roller (if necessary)
  • Park your car on a level surface
  • Raise the parking brake, put the stops under the wheels
  • Raise the right front wheel, remove, put the stopper under the threshold

- Remove the right engine mudguard

It cannot be completely removed, it is enough to unscrew the two fixing screws at the bottom of the wheel arch with an 8 key and bend it down a little, leaving free access to the crankshaft pulley.

- Remove the alternator drive belt

To do this, loosen the nut of the lower bolt of the generator with a key of 19, loosen the nut of the upper fastening of the generator with a key of 17. We shift the generator to the engine and remove the belt. Access to the fixing nuts of the generator is possible from the engine compartment of the car.

- Remove the timing belt cover

To do this, use a 10 key to unscrew 3 screws from its mount (one in the center, two on the side) and pull it up.

- Unscrew the bolt securing the alternator drive pulley to the crankshaft

The screw is tightened with a large torque, so it is recommended to use a powerful 19 wrench or a round head. To prevent the crankshaft from turning, insert the blade of a thick flathead screwdriver between the flywheel teeth in the clutch housing hatch. This procedure is recommended to be done with an assistant, but you can do it alone.

- Remove the alternator drive pulley
- Pre-align installation marks

On the camshaft pulley (protrusion of the mark): the protrusion on the steel back of the timing cover.

To turn the timing handle, we screw the screw holding the crankshaft pulley into its hole at the end of the crankshaft. To do this, turn it clockwise, with a 19 mm key.

- We loosen the nut of the tension roller

If you plan to replace the idler, completely unscrew the nut. To do this, use a key of 17. After unscrewing the nut, turn the roller counterclockwise by hand, the timing belt tension will immediately loosen. If necessary, remove the tension roller.

- Remove the old timing belt

We change from the camshaft pulley, remove from the tension roller, pump, crankshaft gear.

- Putting on a new timing belt

If necessary, install a new belt tensioner and lightly tighten it with a nut. When putting on the belt, carefully follow the installation markings:

On the camshaft pulley (protrusion mark): protrusion on the steel back of the timing cover;

On the crankshaft sprocket (dot): counterflow cut in the front of the engine oil pump.

On the hatch in the clutch housing, the long mark on the flywheel should be in the center of the triangular cutout on the ignition timing dial, which corresponds to setting the pistons of cylinders 1 and 4 to a dead center. (TDC).

If all the alignment marks match exactly, tighten the belt.

- Timing belt tension

We insert a special key into the holes of the tensioner roller and turn it clockwise, the timing belt will stretch. You don't have to try too hard. Lightly tighten the idler pulley nut with a 17 mm open end wrench. We check the degree of tension of the belt: we rotate it with the fingers of the hand around its axis (we lose it). The belt should rotate 90 degrees.

Timing belt tension with a special key

We turn the crankshaft with a screw with a key of 19 so that the belt makes two turns. Once again, we check the alignment of the alignment marks and the belt tension. Tighten with tension roller if necessary.

If there is no special key for tightening the timing belt, you can use two nails of a suitable diameter and pliers. We insert the nails into the holes with rollers, twist them with pliers.

- Finally tighten the tension roller nut

It is not necessary to apply too much force, as the roller pin can be bent, and this is fraught with slippage of the belt. Ideally, it is necessary to tighten the tensioner nut with a torque wrench to a certain torque.

We put on the crankshaft pulley, plastic timing cover, alternator belt, tighten and fix the alternator. We put and repair the right wing of the engine. Install the wheel and lower the car from the jack. We start the engine and check its operation. Adjust the ignition timing if necessary.

The timing belt was replaced on the engine of a VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 car.

Notes and additions

When the timing belt breaks on VAZ 2108, 21081, 2109, 21091 cars with 1,1, 1,3 liter engines, the valve bends when it meets the pistons. On VAZ 21083, 21093, 21099 with 1,5 liter engines, the valve does not bend.

When installing a timing belt on 1,1 and 1,3 liter engines, it is not recommended to turn the camshaft or crankshaft after removing the belt, as the valves may meet the pistons.

-On some engines, the oil pump cover does not have a mounting mark - a cut. When setting marks in this case, it is necessary to install a protrusion for fixing the alternator drive pulley on the crankshaft toothed pulley in the center of the cutout in the lower ebb of the oil pump cover.

A timing belt that has jumped a tooth or two will lead to a change in the valve timing, unstable operation of the engine as a whole, “shots” into the carburetor or muffler.
