Timing belt replacement for VAZ 2110 (2112)

VAZ 2110 with life a bit in disrepair with an 8 valve engine, replacement of the timing belt, tension roller and pump. Tools and fixtures

We will need ring wrenches and heads for 10, 13, 17, and we also need to buy a key for the timing tensioner pulley (it costs 60 rubles, it is sold at any car shop).

Preparatory operations

Be sure to let the engine cool down.

We install bumpers under the rear wheels, remove the front right wheel and plastic fender liner. We drain the antifreeze, it can only be drained from the cylinder block by unscrewing the drain plug near the starter (head 13). If the coolant is to be replaced, then we need to drain it from the radiator.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing the timing belt

  1. Don't forget to open the hood.) 8 valve engine.
  2. Loosen the alternator tensioner jam nut (key 13) and back out the adjusting screw (key 10) as far as it will go. We bring the generator to the cylinder block and remove the drive belt from the generator.
  3. We remove the plastic protective casing of the timing belt by unscrewing three bolts (key 10). Plastic distribution cover.

Set top dead center (TDC)

  1. We turn the crankshaft clockwise until the marks on the camshaft pulley and the bent edge of the metal casing match. Trademark of the distributor.
  2. We remove the alternator belt drive pulley by unscrewing the bolt by 17, you will need a handle with an extension cord and a tube as a lever, since the bolt must be well tightened.

  4. We disassemble the tension roller together with the timing belt by unscrewing the nut (head 17). Then, unscrewing the bolt by 17, remove the camshaft pulley. In order not to lose the key, it can be fixed with electrical tape. The camshaft and crankshaft pulley must be replaced. Additional tension roller.

Replacing the pump

  1. We remove the metal protection, unscrew the top nut by 10 and the three lower screws that hold the water pump. Take out the old water pump. Pump assembly.
  2. Before installing a new pump, lubricate its gasket with a thin layer of sealant. After installing the pump in place evenly, in several passes, tighten the bolts of its fastening.

Installing a new timing belt

  1. Bought a new timing kit from Gates.
  2. The kit includes a toothed belt and a tension roller. Timing kit VAZ 2110.
  3. We check the coincidence of all labels. We start by installing the belt from the crankshaft pulley, then we put it on the camshaft pulley, pump and idler pulley. We make sure that the descending branch of the belt between the pulleys is stretched.
  4. We tighten the timing belt by turning the tension roller counterclockwise. The optimal tension is considered if we can rotate the belt in the longest section by a maximum of 90 degrees with the power of two fingers.

    We also check the tension during the periodic inspection.

    Tighten the tension roller.

  5. We install all the elements in the reverse order of disassembly.

Do not overtighten the timing belt, as this will put more pressure on the pump bearing and it will not work for a long time.

The whole operation took about 30 minutes. Since this procedure does not require hanging the motor, you can do it yourself in the field, and if the pump does not change, then you do not even need to remove the wheel.
