Timing Belt Replacement Nissan Qashqai

Popular all over the world and in Russia in particular, the Nissan Qashqai crossover has been produced from 2006 to the present. In total, there are four varieties of this model: Nissan Qashqai J10 1st generation (09.2006-02.2010), Nissan Qashqai J10 1st generation restyling (03.2010-11.2013), Nissan Qashqai J11 2nd generation (11.2013-12.2019), Nissan Qashqai J11 2nd generation restyling (03.2017-present). They are equipped with 1,2, 1,6, 2 liter petrol engines and 1,5 and 2 liter diesel engines. In terms of self-maintenance, this machine is quite complicated, but with some experience you can handle it yourself. For example, change the timing belt yourself.

Timing Belt/Chain Replacement Frequency Nissan Qashqai

The recommended frequency for replacing a timing belt or timing chain with a Nissan Qashqai, taking into account the realities of Russian roads, is 90 thousand kilometers. Or about once every three years. Also, the belt is more vulnerable to wear than the chain.

Periodically check the status of this item. If you miss the right moment, it threatens with a sudden break in the belt (chain). This can happen at the wrong time, on the road, which is fraught with an emergency. Not to mention the fact that this will disrupt all plans and you will have to call a tow truck, go to a gas station. And the cost of all these activities is expensive.

The wear rate is affected by the quality of the part itself. As well as installation details. For a belt, both under-tightening and “tightening” are equally bad.

Which timing belts / chains to choose for Nissan Qashqai

The belt type differs not depending on the model, Nissan Qashqai J10 or J11, restyled or not, but depending on the type of engine. In total, cars with four types of engines are sold in Russia, each with its own belt or chain:

  • HR16DE (1.6) (petrol) - chain Nissan 130281KC0A; analogues - CGA 2-CHA110-RA, VPM 13028ET000, Pullman 3120A80X10;
  • MR20DE (2.0) (petrol) - Chain Nissan 13028CK80A; analogues - JAPAN CARS JC13028CK80A, RUPE RUEI2253, ASParts ASP2253;
  • M9R (2.0) (diesel) - timing chain;
  • K9K (1,5) (diesel) - timing belt.

It turns out that the belt is placed on only one version of the Qashqai engine - a 1,5-liter diesel engine. The price of analog parts is slightly lower than the original ones. However, if you want to work reliably, you're probably better off paying extra for the original.

Checking the status

The following signs indicate the need to replace the timing chain or belt:

  • the engine gives an error due to the phase difference of the gas distribution mechanism;
  • the car does not start well when cold;
  • extraneous sounds, knocking under the hood from the timing side with the engine running;
  • the engine makes a strange metallic sound, turning into a creak as the speed increases;
  • the engine pulls poorly and spins for a long time;
  • increased fuel consumption.

In addition, the machine may stop moving. And when you try to run it again, it won't work right away. Also, the starter will spin more easily than usual. A simple test will help determine wear: sharply press the accelerator pedal. At the same time, thick black smoke will come out of the exhaust pipe for a set of revolutions.

If you remove the valve cover, chain wear can be seen with the naked eye. If the top sags a lot, then it's time to change. In general, computer diagnostics can give a XNUMX% answer.

Necessary tools and spare parts, consumables

To change the timing chain with your own hands, you will need:

  • ratchet with extension;
  • end heads for 6, 8, 10, 13, 16, 19;
  • screwdriver;
  • automotive sealant;
  • instrument KV10111100;
  • semnik KV111030000;
  • Jack;
  • container for draining engine oil;
  • special puller for crankshaft pulley;
  • knife.

You will also need gloves, work clothes, rags, and a new timing chain to replace. It is better to do everything in the gazebo or in the elevator.

Instructions

How to replace the timing chain with your own hands on engines 1,6 and 2,0:

  1. Drive the car into a pit or elevator. Remove the right wheel.
  2. Unscrew and remove the engine cover. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  3. Drain all engine oil from the engine.
  4. Turn away bolts and remove a cover of a head of the block of cylinders.
  5. Turn the crankshaft, set the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC compression position.
  6. Raise the power unit with a jack. Unscrew and remove the engine mount bracket on the right side.
  7. Remove the alternator belt.
  8. Using a special extractor, preventing the crankshaft pulley from turning, unscrew the bolts of its fastening by 10-15 mm.
  9. Using the KV111030000 puller, remove the crankshaft pulley. Completely unscrew the pulley bracket and remove the roller.
  10. Unscrew and remove the belt tensioner.
  11. Disconnect the variable valve timing system harness connector.
  12. Remove the solenoid valve by first unscrewing the bolt on which it is attached.
  13. This allows you to open access to the side cover of the engine, under which the timing chain is located. Using a ratchet and sockets, unscrew the bolts that hold this cover. Cut the sealing seam with a knife, remove the cover.
  14. Press and lock the tensioner using a XNUMX mm rod inserted into the hole. Unscrew the bolt located at the top of the place with the sleeve on which the chain guide is attached, and remove the guide. Do the same for the second guide.
  15. Now you can finally remove the timing chain. To do this, you must first remove it from the crankshaft sprocket, and then from the pulleys. If at the same time it interferes with the fixation of the tensioner, disassemble it as well.
  16. After that, it's time to start installing a new chain. The procedure is the reverse of the liquidation procedure. It is important to align the marks on the chain with the marks on the pulleys.
  17. Carefully remove any remaining sealant from the cylinder block gaskets and timing cover. Then carefully apply new sealant, making sure that the thickness does not exceed 3,4-4,4 mm.
  18. Reinstall the timing cover and tighten the bolts. Install the rest of the parts in the reverse order of removal.

Similarly, the timing belt is mounted on Qashqai with a 1,5 diesel engine. An important point: before removing the old belt, you need to make marks with a marker on the camshaft, pulley and head, noting the correct location. This will help to install a new belt without any problems.

Conclusion

Replacing a timing chain or timing belt with a Nissan Qashqai is not an easy or difficult task. You must have a good understanding of the car, know how to operate correctly and safely, for example, how to tighten the bolts. Therefore, for the first time, it is better to invite a person who understands and who will explain and show everything. For more experienced car owners, detailed instructions will suffice.
