Misted headlight - is it always a defect?

Car headlights, "fogged" from water vapor, are more likely to be associated with fairly worn-out cars, in which tightness has long ceased to fulfill its role. Meanwhile, this phenomenon can also be found in new cars - often even with the so-called. top shelf.

(B) tightness by assumption...

Many reading this text will be surprised to learn that the headlights installed in cars are not (because they cannot be) hermetic. Why? The answer lies in both operational and safety considerations. Both halogen lamps and xenon lamps generate a lot of heat when illuminated. It is removed through special ventilation slots that prevent overheating of the inside of the headlights and their lenses. Unfortunately, these same gaps allow external moisture to enter the headlights, causing them to fog up. This is especially evident in the summer season after washing the car at a car wash, even despite the high ambient temperature. This is due to the difference in temperature and humidity of the air inside the lampshades compared to the environment. Fogging on the inside of the headlight lenses usually disappears after a few kilometers due to proper air circulation inside them.

…and the leak “acquired”

If we observe moisture condensation inside one of the headlights or, in extreme cases, a noticeable standing of water, then we can definitely talk about damage to the ceiling or the body of the car headlight. The causes of damage can be different: from, for example, a point collision with a stone thrown out from under the wheels of another vehicle on the road, to unprofessional repairs after an accident, to the so-called. "Strikes".

And here's the bad news for all motorists who have to deal with this problem: professionals strongly advise against trying to dry the headlights and reassemble them - damaged ones should be replaced with new ones. Despite efforts, it is impossible to ensure their proper tightness. If only one headlight is damaged, it should not be replaced individually either. Installing a new one next to an already used one leads to a change in the quality and intensity of road lighting, which can lead to a deterioration in traffic safety. Therefore, headlights should always be replaced in pairs. When deciding on their purchase, you should also compare the technical parameters in order to use the lamps in accordance with the factory ones.
