Winter trip on a camper. Step by step

Winter caravanning is a real challenge. If you are traveling with a trailer, before traveling, check its threaded connections, chassis, play in wheel bearings, overrunning device, electrical installation, condition of lights and folding supports. You should also check the condition of the electricity and water supply and, above all, the tightness of the gas installation. It is also worth paying attention to the tire tread - a worn one can significantly increase the braking distance and even cause a skid. Sometimes it happens that in the event of an accident or collision, the poor condition of the tread becomes the reason for the insurance company to refuse compensation, so it is worth remembering.

The statistics are clear: most accidents occur in the summer. Why? The lack of snow, beautiful weather and holidays lull drivers' vigilance. However, in winter we are more concerned about safety: we drive more slowly and more carefully due to the prevailing road conditions or the faster onset of darkness. There is also less congestion on the roads, which only increases during the holidays and winter holidays.

In winter, try to ride during the day. When it gets dark on the road, take rest breaks. Remember that safety is the most important thing, and a few minutes of relaxation will really help you regain your strength.

During winter trips, check the gasoline content in the cylinders more often, because you use it much more often and in larger quantities. Also remove snow from the roof, as it can clog the roof chimney and, as a result, cause the heating to turn off. Regularly check the electrical system components, in particular the gas reducer, hoses, valves or so-called valve blocks. Be sure to check the tightness of the entire installation.

In winter, I also recommend using pure propane, which ensures trouble-free operation of devices even at temperatures of minus 35°C. Butane is not recommended for use under such conditions.

In winter, campervan users have a distinct advantage: they can climb almost all mountains, whereas trailer users do not have to. Although it must be admitted that none of them will pass, for example, through the Eurotunnel connecting the UK with France, since the rules prohibit vehicles with gas devices from entering the tunnel.

Before traveling abroad, check whether vehicles with trailers are allowed on the roads you plan to drive on in winter! This is not possible everywhere, so you may be unpleasantly disappointed. Some mountain routes are temporarily closed to vehicles with trailers, while others are closed due to snow, for example. Detailed information on this subject can be found on the Internet.

Don't forget to take snow chains with you when going into mountainous areas. Be sure to also bring a bag of gravel with sand and a shovel, which will be useful when digging your car out of a snowdrift or digging out snow.

For winter trips, it is worth purchasing a vestibule or a winter awning. They are very useful when you are parked because they allow you to enjoy the delights of the winter landscape while enjoying your morning coffee - if the temperature and weather permits. Modern vestibules and canopies protect from wind and precipitation, and thanks to pitched roofs, snow does not accumulate on them. Similar products are offered by well-known manufacturers such as Isabella or DWT.

In winter, roads become clogged with commonly used de-icing agents. Unfortunately, they often damage the zinc coating of the trailer chassis. If this happens, clean, degrease and dry the area, then apply at least two coats of cold galvanizing. Metal parts that are not protected at the factory must be coated with a layer of lubricant.
