The German channel Autogefühl tested the BMW i4 M50, the most powerful version of the BMW i4, a D-segment sedan that should compete with the Tesla Model 3. The car strongly resembled the BMW 3/4 series, although the reviewer found some flaws in it. The lightly working steering wheel bothered him the most.

It started with a curiosity, i.e. the suspension: at the rear, an air suspension is installed as standard, while at the front, an adaptive suspension is used. The producer explains it in such a way that he wanted the information coming from the road to be a bit more direct. It could also be a lack of space under the hood.

The BMW i4 is built on a universal diesel-electric platform, ma Batteries capacity 80,7 kWhthere is no front boot. The German manufacturer is clearly reluctant to provide buyers with space above the front axle, they must be satisfied with what they get in the rear: boot capacity of the BMW i4 в 470 liters. The Tesla Model 3 has 45 liters less (425 liters), the Kia EV6 will offer the owner 20 liters more (490 liters) - but both Tesla and Kia also have front racks. We do not know about the space under the floor in BMW, because the VDA procedure does not take it into account and Autogefühl did not look there:

Acceleration of the BMW i4 M50 up to 100 km / h continues 3,9 secondsThe car is therefore the same as the Tesla Model 3 Long Range with the Acceleration Boost package, but weaker than the Tesla Model 3 Performance. The latter is a very strong message: "M will take off worse than Tesla from under the lights." The weaker i4 eDrive40 variant accelerates to 100 km / h in 5,7 seconds, which places it close to the Tesla Model 3 SR + (5,7 seconds) and below the Kii EV6 77,4 kWh AWD (5,2 seconds).

The BMW i4 has been equipped with the new BMW OS8 system, has carbon inserts on the cockpit, however, there is not much space in the rear seatwhich is surprising when you consider the length of the body. The storyteller is tightly behind him, the high central tunnel is unlikely to make the journey of a possible passenger sitting in the middle more pleasant.

The car accelerated perfectly, YouTuber was delighted with its performance - the BMW i4 M50 is the fastest version in the offer - but he was surprised by the steering system. He described it as "atypical for BMW" because the driver has the impression of incomplete control of the vehicle. In his opinion, the steering wheel worked too lightly, although he praised the car's behavior when cornering. During normal driving, the suspension was supposed to resemble the BMW 3 or 4 Series, although the Autogefühl representative was not particularly in favor of mixing different types of unevenness damping.

After driving 100,7 kilometers in 1,5 hours (average ~ 67 km / h) BMW i4 M50 energy consumption was 18,9 kWh / 100 km, which would translate into a maximum range of 427 kilometers on a single charge. If the ride was very varied, with numerous accelerations and the highway, this is a very good result.
