BMW unveils first self-driving R 1200 GS – Moto Previews

It is the first self-driving motorcycle and represents the foundation for future technologies aimed at improving safety and driving pleasure.

Not only self-propelled vehicles, now also motorcycle? No, this is not entirely true. Since the prototype presented BMW at BMW Motorrad Techday 2018 able to move independently does not foresee the production motorcycle of the future. He represents more than anything else technology to develop future systems and functions that will further enhance motorcycle safety and driving pleasure.

The purpose of the development of this prototype is to gain additional knowledge about dynamics driving on the move to immediately detect dangerous situations and therefore support the driver with appropriate safety systems, for example when turning at an intersection or when braking hard.

In the group test area BMW from Miramas, in the south of Francemoving like magic, the BMW R 1200 GS made its first lap in front of the journalists present. Designed by engineer Stefan Hans and his team, the car automatically starts, accelerates, turns around on a winding test track, and decelerates on its own to a stop.

In addition to this new frontier in driving pleasure and safety, BMW Motorrad has introduced many other technology projects exciting: from lights that follow the trajectory of the vehicle, to laser projectors, a motorcycle frame entirely made through a process 3D Print, motorcycle components such as frame, swingarm and wheels, lightweight but very strong, are made of carbonas well as V2V communication between the two vehicles and the associated benefits in terms of safety and comfort for the motorcyclist through digital interaction.
