Bolwell turns into caravans

The Edge is an aerodynamic van made from molded composite material designed to perform off-road and fit to be towed by something as compact as a Subaru Outback.

Bolwell, having had success on the racetracks and on the showroom floor in the past, has evolved from its V8 sports cars and Kenworth truck bodies into a new generation of caravans. He introduces a multifunctional tugboat called The Edge and uses the Melbourne Leisurefest on September 30th to spread the word.

The Edge is an aerodynamic van made from molded composite material designed to perform off-road and fit to be towed by something as compact as a Subaru Outback. This is the work of Vaughan Bolwell, a designer with experience in everything from racing bikes to trucks.

The Bolwell RV claims the van combines light weight and low drag with aerodynamic stability. It is made of molded fiberglass reinforced with carbon fiber.

Bolwell started working on The Edge in 2008 and the end result has a number of claimed innovations. The bodywork is glued, not bolted or bolted, and features Bolwell's own SureFoot independent trailing arm suspension.

Leisurefest takes place at Sandown Racecourse September 30-October 3 and includes a wide range of activities, from off-road towing training to a recreational boating license course. There is also an off-road track run by Four Wheel Drive Victoria.

The Bolwell name first appeared on the roads in the 1960s. It was then that 16-year-old Campbell Bolwell began assembling sports cars in his parents' garage. His company started in 1962, and over the next 20 years, more than 800 cars were produced, some of them complete turnkey and others as owner-assembled kits.

The most famous is the Nagari, which could be fitted with a range of V8 engines and raced successfully across Australia. Campbell decided to release another sports car in 2005, and by 2008 he had the Nagari concept, which was reborn as a carbon fiber-bodied speedster.

But Bolwell's big business in recent years has been in the commercial world, where it does everything from making cabs, hoods and fairings for Kenworth trucks to repairing Boeing 737 jet engine gearboxes.
