What will happen if you turn on the reverse gear at speed, on the go without a clutch (automatic, manual)

Many motorists are interested in the question, what will happen if you put the gearshift lever or selector in the “R” position when moving forward. In fact, if you have a modern car with a manual or automatic transmission, then you cannot physically switch, for example, at a speed of 60 km / h to the rear.

Gear shifting occurs only after the clutch is depressed, the clutch basket paddles or tabs disconnect the transmission from the engine. At this point, you can upshift or skip a few gears lower in case of braking.

If at this moment, instead of the first gear, you try to shift the lever to the reverse position, then you will not have enough strength for this, since you can only switch to reverse gear after the car has completely stopped. After all, even if the clutch is depressed, the torque is transmitted to the gears and shafts in the gearbox. You will have to shift to neutral, and only then to reverse.

Automatic transmission

The automatic transmission is arranged quite differently and automatics are responsible for shifting gears on it. Sensors at any speed block those gears that you cannot switch to. Therefore, you will not be able to switch to reverse gear at full speed.

Even if you risk shifting into reverse during the slowest forward motion in neutral, the damage can be very significant. In this case, as well as on the mechanics, before changing gear you will have to depress the brake pedal to stop the car.

All of the above is theory. But in practice, there are enough cases when people confuse transmissions. According to the testimonies of some unique people who decided to conduct such experiments, they heard a crunch in the box, felt slight jolts, and the cars stopped abruptly.
