Daihatsu Terios 1.5 DVVT TOP S

Think back to your predecessor. Narrow, tall, with a raised belly, unattractive shape, good four-wheel drive and an interior that, due to the narrowness and materials used on long journeys, was more of an emergency exit than a form of coveted transport. Creating a novelty, the Japanese made more effort and gave way to the trend of increasing the number of car bodies. Thus, Therios gained 21 centimeters in length (exceeding the limit of four meters) and 14 in width. These last centimeters are most noticeable in the cabin, where the driver no longer has to worry about knee bumping on the passenger when shifting gears. Now there is a lot of room, and there is probably no excuse for touching the passenger's feet.

Despite its size, Terios has grown, but it is still the most convenient for the bustle of the city. A turning circle aimed at a distance of less than ten meters (unlike classic soft SUVs, where it takes half a hectare of grass to turn in addition to two lanes and two bus stops), it is considered one of the fastest, narrow body designed for small parking pits. at a 20-centimeter distance of the abdomen from the ground, all curbs are moved without any consequences. Although it is not meant to be. ...

The only thing that can get in the way of loading bags into an already mostly 380-liter trunk (for its class) is the trunk lid. They open to the side, so you'll have to load the trunk from the left side, because the door opens the other way, and even "only" 90 degrees, which otherwise prevents the door from getting into another car. Because of the spare tire they still carry, they are also a bit heavier so we can't imagine it opening up. The trunk folds into a flat bottom in a few movements (folding the rear bench, divisible in three, towards the front seats), and frees up even more space. Due to the off-road design, the loading edge is understandably higher, but stacking in the trunk makes the bottom and edge level much lighter, making it easier to empty or fill the trunk in a vineyard cottage.

On it, whether it is muddy, paved, grassy, snowy, such an all-wheel drive Terios can go at any moment. With good permanent all-wheel drive (with the right tires), and if it breaks somewhere, even with a 50:50 center diff lock on, the Terios is capable of taking many forgotten corners. On narrow roads, even better on forest paths, they have the advantage of being narrower than almost all soft SUVs. As long as other "soft" hips are already gliding over the branches, you can keep moving with Terios without touching. Just in case, if some branch still reaches Daihatsu, they have a protective task - plastic protection of the thresholds, fenders and bumpers. The bottom is also protected by plastic.

Daihatsu had a 1 liter petrol engine which, with 5 horsepower, is the most powerful version of the Terios on the market. The bike loves to spin, and with a short-calculation five-speed gearbox (fifth is the longest, it can be used from a good 105 kilometers per hour to the “end”), its home is city streets, where the Terios’ already mentioned advantages come to the fore . However, once streets are replaced by highways and sections of highways, driving becomes more and more of a torment. The engine is loud and at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour (tachometer shows 130 rpm) the view of the on-board computer and the fuel consumption displayed there (about ten liters per 3.500 kilometers) spoil the smile even more.

Even at low speeds, the fairly precise and reasonably informative steering gives less confidence and only confirms that the Terios is a city car that will make you think twice about whether you really need a highway route. Especially if the road goes uphill and if the car has a heavier load, besides the driver, maybe three more passengers. A loaded Terios quickly gives up when going uphill, and the speedometer needle drops faster as it rises. Only 140 Nm of torque is still recognizable! An estimated 14-second acceleration from zero to 100 kilometers per hour confirms that Terios is not an athlete even for short distances. On the trails you will be sued for some kind of turbodiesel (because Europe mostly requires soft SUVs with diesels, Daihatsu's lack of a turbodiesel is a big disadvantage) or at least a multi-torque engine as overtaking is just as rare , like long planes without oncoming cars.

The chassis is more rigid, sensitive to short lateral irregularities and road irregularities, which are transmitted to the passenger compartment through vibrations, including due to the short wheelbase.

The Stability Assist ensures you won't be surprised at the leaking rear, and in addition to two side and two front airbags and curtain airbags, safety is also provided by ABS and anti-skid systems. Since the Terios is not a sports car, also due to the tilt of the body, the non-deactivation of the stabilization system is not such a disadvantage.

Inside, apart from more space (enough for the head, now for the shoulders), don't expect anything special. The dashboard was not designed with design guidelines in mind and is not a gem in terms of ergonomics (some buttons are not illuminated), which is best demonstrated by the remotely located (left under the steering wheel) button for controlling the on-board computer, which also has this disadvantage in that that when you select a certain parameter (current, average consumption, range ...) it automatically returns to the clock display. Even the altitude display (in the on-board computer), which showed 2.500 meters on the motorway near Celje, is not to be commended ...

The interior is decorated quite simply and economically. But how else would you interpret the same buttons for sufficiently efficient ventilation and manual air conditioning like the Toyota Yaris? Well, component borrowing is not uncommon in the automotive industry, at least among subsidiaries such as Toyota and Daihatsu.

The Terios has ample room for four adult passengers (three can be squeezed in in the back), and the sliding tilt of the second row of seats can also be praised. Thanks to the rather flat and high seats, getting in and out is comfortable, just pay attention to the dirty thresholds.

Terios is a city car and SUV. Urban because of the engine and dimensions, and an SUV because of the ability to drive to any cottage and vineyard and deep into the forest among mushrooms and strawberries without injury and travel by hand. And this is probably interesting to customers who travel on such routes, because otherwise we see no reason for someone to deduct (at least) 20 thousand for a package that usually consumes (cities, highways, expressways), consumes too much fuel and is less comfortable with the stream of more affordable classic cars. Terios only confirms that one of the trade-offs when buying an all-wheel drive car is also a wallet.

Overall rating (280/420)

  • If you place the new next to the old, some of the differences will appear day and night. The novelty retains the good mechanics of its predecessor and corrects (though not completely) some of its shortcomings. Safety and spaciousness are better, ergonomics are still a little lame. Since this is a compromise, a three is a real score for him.

  • Exterior (11/15)

Formally, Terios also made a step forward due to the increased dimensions. The build quality is good.

  • Interior (90/140)

The biggest difference compared to the ancestor is noticeable in the interior, where there is more space due to the greater width. Ergonomics and materials could be better.

  • Engine, transmission (32

    / 40)

The unit is loud at high speeds and too weak (torque) when the Terios is loaded, especially when driving uphill. The gear lever works nicely and smoothly, and the gearbox is tuned for city driving.

  • Driving performance (67

    / 95)

Reliable mainly due to all-wheel drive and good steering, better braking feel.

  • Performance (24/35)

The engine is not designed to set speed records. Neither top speed nor acceleration. For calm drivers who overtake a little.

  • Security (24/45)

They took much better care of safety - front and side airbags in front, curtain airbags, stabilization electronics. Cushions are on all rear seats.

  • Economy

Expect high flow rates that are logical for the body shape but still overpriced. So it is with the price. Four-wheel drive costs a little more.
