Subaru Forester Knock Sensor

The occurrence of detonation combustion in the working chamber causes a destructive effect on the Subaru Forester engine and related components. Thus, the ECU corrects the operation of the engine in such a way as to exclude non-optimal ignition of the air-fuel mixture.

A special sensor is used to determine the occurrence of detonation. The quality of the power unit and the life of the engine and related components depend on its condition.

Purpose of the knock sensor

The Subaru Forester knock sensor has the shape of a round torus. On the side there is an output for connecting to an electronic engine control unit. In the center of the meter there is a hole into which the bolt fixing the sensor enters. Inside the working part is a sensitive piezoelectric element. It reacts to vibration and converts it into a voltage of a certain amplitude and frequency.

The ECU constantly analyzes the signal coming from the DD. The appearance of detonation is determined by the deviation of vibration from the norm. After that, the main module, according to the algorithm of actions laid down in it, corrects the operation of the power unit, eliminating non-optimal ignition of the air-fuel mixture.

The main purpose of the sensor is the timely detection of detonation. As a result, this leads to a decrease in the influence of parasitic destructive loads on the engine, which has the best effect on the resource of the power unit.

Knock sensor location on Subaru Forester

The location of the knock sensor in the Subaru Forester is chosen in such a way as to obtain the greatest sensitivity. This allows you to detect the occurrence of detonation at an early stage. The sensor is located between the intake manifold and the air cleaner housing, below the throttle body. It is located directly on the cylinder block.

Sensor cost

Subaru Forester vehicles use different models of knock sensors depending on the production period. From the moment the car was launched until May 2003, the Subaru 22060AA100 dashboard was installed in the car. In retail, it is found at a price of 2500-8900 rubles.

As of May 2005, the 22060AA100 sensor has been completely replaced by Subaru's 22060AA140 sensor. The new DD has a retail price of 2500 to 5000 rubles. This sensor was replaced with a new sensor in August 2010. Subaru 22060AA160 came to replace. The price of this DD is 2500-4600 rubles.

Knock sensor test methods

If you suspect a malfunction of the knock sensor, first of all, you should refer to the error log generated by the ECU and the on-board computer. Self-diagnosis when checking DD can detect a decrease in the sensitivity of the meter, an excess voltage at the output, or the presence of an open circuit. Each type of malfunction has its own code, by deciphering it, the car owner will find out about sensor malfunctions.

You can check the health of the DD using a multimeter or voltmeter. To do this, use the instructions below.

  • Remove the Subaru Forester knock sensor.
  • Connect the probes of a multimeter or voltmeter to the outputs of the meter.
  • Lightly tap on the work area with a bolt or metal rod.
  • Check instrument readings. In the case of a good condition of the knock sensor, each knock on it will be accompanied by the appearance of voltage on the probes. If there is no reaction to knocking, the hard drive is faulty.

You can check the performance of the knock sensor without removing it from the car. To do this, when the engine is idling, press the working zone DD. With a good sensor, the crankshaft speed should increase. If this does not happen, then the risk of problems with DD is high.

All independent test methods do not accurately determine the condition of the HDD. This is due to the fact that for normal operation of the sensor, it must generate pulses of a certain frequency and amplitude, depending on the level of vibration. It is impossible to check the signal with improvised means. Therefore, only diagnostics on a special tripod gives an accurate result.
