Honda D13B engine

The Honda D13B engine belongs to the D series, produced from 1984 to 2005. Most often found on Honda Civic cars. A distinctive feature of such power units is a small working volume. It is in the range from 1,2 to 1,7 liters (D series as a whole).

The volume of D13B is 1343 cm³. There are versions with only one camshaft of the gas distribution system. Although among the units of the D series there are motors with two camshafts. All internal combustion engines are equipped with a variable valve timing mechanism.Honda D13B engine

D13B was produced in several modifications:

  • D13B1
  • D13B2
  • D13B4
  • D13B7

In all cases, the engine has a volume of 1,3 liters. Power ranges from 66 to 91 horsepower.

Unit reliability

The reliability of the D13B is undeniable. No wonder the engine was produced from 1987 to 2006. For almost two decades, the motor has been popular and successfully competed with numerous analogues. D13B is able to withstand oil starvation for a long time and fully operate with a minimum of coolant. A car with this unit can get to a service station without any oil at all, rattling terribly along the road. The overhaul of the D13B is quite costly.

What cars the engine was installed on

  • Honda Civic (1987-2000)
  • Honda Civic Ferio (1991-2000)
  • Honda Civic Shuttle (1987-1997)
  • Honda Logo (1996-2001)
  • Honda Associates (1996-2006)

Reviews of car owners, maintainability

The opinion of motorists should be considered using the example of a 1999 Honda Civic Ferio. In general terms, the engine is torquey, but it is slightly gluttonous. First of all, users emphasize problems not with the engine, but with the automatic transmission. Often, a filter (an ordinary metal mesh) becomes clogged in the box, which can only be reached by completely disassembling the automatic transmission.

According to reviews, gearboxes are not reliable. The variator is completely disappointing to the limit. Problems are observed with the cylinder head gasket, changing which can easily strip the threads on the block. Without much effort, the valve cover bolts break off.

The D13B motor often consumes a lot of oil. Especially fluid zhor is observed with excessively active driving. Due to the age of the car, it is often necessary to replace the piston rings. Also, many motorists emphasize that during parsing, coking of the piston drain holes is observed. When fixing such a problem, as a rule, the liners are additionally changed.

Users warn that approaching the engine without a torque wrench is generally prohibited. Threaded connections are easily broken, which leads to a rather unpleasant repair. For example, cylinder head bolts can be unscrewed with a light movement along with the thread. Interestingly, they can be replaced with bolts from the "nine", after cutting the appropriate thread.

Often there are problems with the hydraulic booster and cooling system. In addition, the cost of spare parts just rolls over. At the same time, the price of the car itself is relatively small.

Reviews for another popular car - Honda Logo are neutral. When buying from an engine, piston rings are often developed. In this case, the muffler throws out drops of oil. Of the malfunctions, in some cases there are problems with the throttle position sensor. No less rare is a malfunction of the fan and temperature sensor.

When buying a Honda Logo with a D13B engine, it is recommended to immediately replace the radiator cap, adjust the valves if necessary, and install the Multitronics VC731 on-board computer. It is also advisable to replace all attachment belts, rollers and timing belt. Naturally, the battery may not be in the best condition. Spark plugs, filters and oil should be changed regularly.

Contract engine

The unit under the contract is sold at a price of 25 thousand rubles with attachments. In this case, only the starter and gearbox are missing. An engine at this price is usually shipped from Japan and has a lot of residual mileage. Given the availability of internal combustion engines, sometimes it is simply easier to replace than to repair.

It is quite possible to find a Honda D13B for 10 thousand rubles. But in this version there is no attachment. Usually this power unit has a mileage in the Russian Federation. In all cases, the motor is sent without problems by postal companies convenient for the buyer.

What kind of oil to fill in the engine

Motorists are advised to use oil with a viscosity of 10w30. Thick filling is not recommended. The maximum is allowed to fill in 10w40. Also suitable for D series engines is 5w30 and 5w40 oil.Honda D13B engine

Engine swap

The D13B motor is not the worst example of a power unit, so it is not changed so often. The D15B engine (130 horsepower) is available in terms of price. In this embodiment, the replacement of wires and gearbox is required. Also, when installing the D15B, the pump in the tank changes, almost all attachments and the fuel line.

A more expensive option is the B16A2 installation. With such a swap, even greater changes are additionally made. The wires and gearbox are being replaced, the pump and fuel system are being changed. Plus, other mounts and attachments are used.

The installation of Dual Carb helps to further improve the technical characteristics. Perhaps this is the most budgetary project. Helps to significantly increase power. Components are easily found in the secondary market.
