The MR16DDT engine, among other models, was originally developed by Nissan Motor Company for installation in the Nissan Juke in 2011. The presence of turbocharging with a relatively small volume made it possible to make this car more dynamic without sacrificing gas mileage.
The considered internal combustion engine has four cylinders, has a system for changing the phases of the gas distribution mechanism on the valves.
A turbocharger is also installed on the engine. The MR16DDT marking can be deciphered as a motor with two overhead camshafts, one turbocharger, as well as direct injection of the fuel mixture, with the possibility of changing the valve timing.

Reliability and maintainability of the engine
The motor is quite working and of high quality, but not a single internal combustion engine is without flaws, and the one under consideration is no exception.
The problem of the MR16DDT engine, according to most owners, is the presence of extra sounds during its operation, and we are talking about a mileage of 50 thousand kilometers or more.
The problem should be solved by removing the engine and opening access to the gas distribution mechanism. There is a possibility of chain stretching, and the location of the tensioner may be incorrect. With all this, the structural elements of the gas distribution mechanism may look absolutely normal, without excessive wear. Resetting the circuit (if it is still possible) or replacing it overhaul fixes the noise problem in the engine.
Known to owners of cars equipped with an MR16DDT engine, the problem is when the car suddenly stops responding to the accelerator pedal. In this case, the instrument panel displays the indication “Check engine” or even more malfunctions.
The problem is solved by using the well-known ScanDoc program, which, when used, will indicate an error under the code P2138 - the signals of the pedal position sensors do not correspond to the real situation. The reasons may be in the breakdown of one of the sensors, unreliable contact of current-carrying parts, as well as the exit from the normal operating state of the engine control unit, which in the end will have to be dealt with. Its location is under the hood, right in front of the battery.
A processor is installed in the box, the dismantling of which is not required for diagnostics - all manipulations are through a special diagnostic slot.
As a result, you need to find identification data through the program, guided by which you need to purchase firmware with a number of improvements, and it all depends on the needs of the owner. Entering a new firmware completely solves the problem. With such uncomplicated chip tuning, a problem that is relatively terrible for the driver can be solved.
Replacing the timing chain will also be a necessary operation for each owner of this unit. It is performed in the following sequence:
- Drain engine oil;
- Set the piston of the front cylinder to a position simulating the upper compression point of the fuel mixture by turning the crankshaft pulley;
- Dismantle the pulley;
- Dismantle the lower space of the oil pan;
- Dismantle the solenoid valve;
- Dismantle the belt tensioner responsible for attachments;
- Dismantle the front casing of the motor;
- Dismantle the crankshaft oil seal from the front casing of the motor (special care must be taken here, often when performing this operation, the motor cover is damaged);
- Remove the timing tensioner, tensioner shoe, chain, damper, crankshaft star.
Install in reverse order, provided that the crankshaft key is on top. Observe the location of the mounting marks responsible for the orientation of the part. The operation is recommended to be performed regularly, because if the chain breaks, this can lead to very serious damage.
What kind of oil to fill
The best option for the MR16DDT engine is Nissan Motor Oil 0W-30. In its absence, you can fill in oil of high-quality brands with similar characteristics. As an option - 5W-30. In the presence of constant low temperatures, you can stop at the 0W-30 or 5W-40 options.
