Volkswagen BXW engine

The engine builders of the VAG auto concern created a power unit that ensured the success of the promotion of sold cars of their own production.

Description

In 2007, the BXW engine was presented to the public for the first time. The event took place at the Geneva Motor Show.

The motor was intended for use on the increasingly popular cars of the VAG concern.

At the design stage, reliability, power, economy and ease of maintenance were at the forefront. The ergonomics of the engine are not disregarded.

Time has shown that the engineers of the auto giant Volkswagen successfully coped with the tasks set.

In 2006, the engine saw the light of day. Production was carried out until 2014.

The VW BXW engine is a 1,4-liter in-line gasoline four-cylinder aspirated engine with a capacity of 86 hp. with and a torque of 132 Nm.

Installed on cars:

  • Volkswagen Polo (2009-2014);
  • Skoda Fabia (2006-2013);
  • Fabia Kombi (2007-2014);
  • Roomster /5J/ (2006-2014);
  • Roomster Internship /5J/ (2007-2014);
  • Seat Leon II (2010-2012);
  • Althaea (2009-2014);
  • Ibiza (2006-2014).

Thin-walled cast-iron liners are installed in the aluminum cylinder block.

The piston is made according to the classical scheme - made of aluminum alloy, with three rings. Two upper compression, lower oil scraper, three-element.

Connecting rods are steel, forged, I-section.

The block head is aluminum. On the upper surface is a bed with two camshafts. Seats with valve guides are pressed inside. The valve mechanism includes hydraulic compensators, which save the car owner from manually adjusting the thermal gap.

The crankshaft rests on five bearings. Liners of main bearings steel, with an antifriction covering. The design feature of the crankshaft is its impossibility of removal.

If it becomes necessary to repair the main journals or replace their bearings, the entire cylinder block assembly with the shaft must be replaced.

Timing drive of a complicated design, two-belt. The main (main) drives the intake camshaft.

From it, by means of an auxiliary (small) belt, rotation is transmitted to the outlet.

Magneti Marelli 4HV injection/ignition system. ECU engine operation includes a self-diagnosis function. The BXW is equipped with an ECM - Electronic Fuel Pedal Control. Four high-voltage coils are involved in sparking. Spark plugs NGK ZFR6T-11G.

Combined lubrication system. Gear oil pump, trochoidal type. The rotation is driven from the toe of the crankshaft. System capacity 3,2 liters. Oil with specification VW 501 01, VW 502 00, VW 504 00 is used.

The internal combustion engine has a knock control system.

BXW has a good ratio of speed characteristics, which is clearly seen in the graph below. The main part of motorists notes the high driving performance of the motor and good acceleration dynamics.

The engine provides the necessary indicators of power and speed despite its small dimensions.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Reliability

The reliability of the engine is judged by its resource, safety margin, durability of the CPG and CCM without overhaul.

BXW is considered a reliable motor. Even after 200 thousand km of run, its CPG remains practically unchanged - there are no critical signs of wear, compression does not decrease. Many motorists on the forums confirm the validity of what has been said. For example, Gsu85 says the following about this: “… I have such an engine on my Roomster. Mileage already 231.000 km, so far everything is perfect».

Car service workers emphasize that the motor is ideally able to “pass” 400 thousand kilometers before the first overhaul.

Car owners are reminded of the same. Opinion of Anatoly from Rostov: “... do not delay maintenance and do not save on consumables - half a million will pass without problems". It is supported by Vovi6666 (Bashkortostan): "... reliable and not whimsical engine. The main thing is to change everything in time».

Some motorists noticed such a feature of the unit as unpretentiousness and stability of operation at low temperatures. There is information that even at -40˚С the engine started confidently after a night in an open parking lot.

The margin of safety allows you to significantly increase its power. But you should not get involved in tuning for a number of reasons. First of all, any intervention in the design of the internal combustion engine will significantly reduce its resource. Here you have to face a choice - either ride like a car, but not for long, or drive without repairs and without unnecessary worries for a long time.

In addition to reducing the resource, tuning will noticeably change a number of characteristics for the worse. For example, the degree of exhaust purification will be reduced to Euro 2 standards.

It is necessary to be guided by the fact that the calculated BXW parameters already provide the maximum speed and power of the unit. At the same time, the engine allows you to increase its power to about 125 hp. by flashing the ECU. Chip tuning practically does not reduce the resource of the unit.

Weak spots

Weaknesses have not bypassed BXW. The problem is the timing drive. The two-belt drive made it possible to reduce the width of the cylinder head, while at the same time it became a voltage concentrator for every car owner. Firstly, belts have a small resource. After 80-90 thousand kilometers, they need to be replaced. Secondly, if the belt breaks or jumps, the valves will bend.

Even more serious damage is possible - cylinder head, pistons.

Our drivers are not happy with the increased sensitivity of the unit to the quality of gasoline. As a result of clogging of the throttle assembly and the USR valve, the revolutions lose their stability and begin to float.

Excessive tension in motorists is caused by the knocking of hydraulic lifters. They usually occur after long runs. Often indicate a malfunction in the lubrication system.

Ignition coils are not known for their durability. Unfortunately, this weakness is characteristic of all Volkswagen engines.

There are no other similar breakdowns in the internal combustion engine, which once again emphasizes its reliability.

Maintainability

Maintainability issues are relevant for our motorists, as many are trying to solve them on their own.

The build quality of the BXW is undeniable, but resource wear makes itself felt. It is because of it that there is a need for a major overhaul of the internal combustion engine.

There are two downsides to BXW when recovering. First, the aluminum cylinder block is considered non-repairable, essentially disposable. The second lies in the design features of the crankshaft, which is not separately replaced.

Repair parts can be purchased at any specialized store. There are also two nuances here. Firstly, for repairs it is necessary to use only original components and parts. Secondly, you need to be careful and experienced in terms of excluding the possibility of acquiring an outright fake.

And another negative point is the cost. Airat K. expressed this somewhat chaotically on the forum, but intelligibly: “... in terms of spare parts and consumables, if you buy from an authorized dealer, then the prices will be exorbitant».

BXW is simple in design. It can be restored even in garage conditions. But this is possible only with a thorough knowledge of the motor and the technology of its repair. For example, you can not remove the cylinder head when the pistons are at top dead center. Or such a nuance as installing the head in its regular place.

A gasket is used as a seal with a cylinder block, and a sealant is used with a cover (camshaft bed). There are many such pitfalls. It is enough to neglect one and a new front of work on the restoration of the internal combustion engine is provided.

The video tells about the maintenance on your own:

Considering all the factors of the upcoming repair, it will not be superfluous to consider the option of purchasing a contract engine. At a cost, such a step can be much cheaper. The average price is about 60 thousand rubles. Depending on the configuration of attachments, year of manufacture and mileage, it can significantly decrease or increase.

The Volkswagen BXW engine has revealed its potential on various models of the Volkswagen concern. Car owners appreciated its power, durability and efficiency both in urban conditions and on long trips.
