Kia Bongo Engines

Kia Bongo is a series of trucks, the production of which began in 1989.

Due to its small dimensions, ideal for urban driving, this vehicle cannot be used to transport large loads - no more than one ton.

All generations of Kia Bongo are equipped with diesel units with sufficient power and low fuel consumption.

Kia Bongo Engines Little can be said about the first generation Kia Bongo: a standard unit with a displacement of 2.5 liters and a five-speed gearbox. After 3 years, the engine was finalized and its volume slightly increased - 2.7 liters.

A small variety of power units was successfully compensated by different bodies, as well as practical chassis solutions (for example, a smaller diameter of the rear wheels, which increases the model's cross-country ability).

For the second generation, a 2.7-liter diesel engine was used, which, with further restyling, was increased to 2.9 liters. Kia Bongo of the second generation were equipped with rear-wheel drive, and with further restyling they developed into all-wheel drive models.

As can be seen from the above information, in Kia Bongo cars, the most common power unit was the J3 diesel engine, the technical characteristics, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of which should be considered in more detail.

J3 Diesel Engine Specifications

This motor is most widely used in Kia Bongo cars of all generations, as it has proven to be a powerful unit with a long service life, as well as low fuel consumption.

Produced in both atmospheric and turbocharged versions. An interesting fact: in the J3 engine with a turbine, power increased (from 145 to 163 hp) and consumption was reduced (from a maximum of 12 liters to 10.1 liters).Kia Bongo Engines

In both atmospheric and turbocharged versions, the displacement of the engine is 2902 cm3. 4 cylinders are arranged in one row, and there are 4 valves per cylinder. The diameter of each cylinder is 97.1 mm, the piston stroke is 98 mm, the compression ratio is 19. On the atmospheric version, no superchargers are provided, fuel injection is direct.

The naturally aspirated diesel engine J3 has a capacity of 123 hp, while its turbocharged version develops 3800 thousand revolutions from 145 to 163 hp. Diesel fuel of general standards is used, the addition of special additives is not required. The design features of the Kia Bongo model are designed for city driving, so fuel consumption is:

  • For atmospheric version: from 9.9 to 12 liters of diesel fuel.
  • For a motor with a turbine: from 8.9 to 10.1 liters.

Some information about the D4BH motor

This unit was used in the period from 01.2004 to 12.2011 and has established itself as an internal combustion engine with a long service life and average power:

  • For the atmospheric version - 103 hp.
  • For a motor with a turbine - from 94 to 103 hp.

Kia Bongo EnginesOf the positive aspects of this, one can name the design features of the cylinder block, which, like the exhaust manifold, is made of high-quality cast iron. The remaining parts (intake manifold, cylinder head) were made of aluminum. High pressure fuel pumps for the D4BH series of engines were used both mechanical and injection type. The manufacturer indicated a mileage of 150000 km, but in actual operation it was more than 250000 km, after which a major overhaul was required.
