Test Drive MOTO

Husaberg FE 600 E.

For a small company that came into being two years after Husqvarna passed into Italian hands (1986), this is a success worthy of every respect. He is also credited with four enthusiastic motorcycle engineers who, with the help of investors, have realized their ideas and therefore their dreams. Today, the company, which was owned by the Austrian KTM for four years, employs 50 people, which is still not much. However, their motto remained the same: to make a motorcycle that is mainly for racing!

The FE 600 E is no exception. Even if you think that because of this letter "E" at the end (which means electric starter), this is something more civil than one without an electric starter. However, this is not true. The mass of the battery and starter is almost negligible. Maybe only a world championship racer thinks otherwise. Who knows? For us mere mortals who spend our free time riding off-road bikes, that "E" is like a cold beer mug that fits in so well in the dog heat that you're just saying, "This one fell in the right place. … "Great!"

In the middle of more difficult terrain, you can barely climb over rocks, you try to keep the bike under your helmet, and you rock the bike with a sliding clutch so you can get over the obstacle - and your engine stalls! The only thing I missed was usually the first thought when you get out of breath on the launcher. The realm of "electricity" at the time, right? !! Anyone who has been in a similar situation already knows what we are talking about.

Each "Berge", as the participants call it in the jargon, has a "printed stamp" that is "inhaled" by hand. The frame and motor are handmade. If you add the rest of the components, which are very casually attached to the frame, it quickly becomes clear that he is a thoroughbred athlete. Rational to the end, simple execution, without lipstick - exactly what a motorcycle really needs for off-road riding. Make no mistake, the Berg can be driven on the road too, it's only meant for many other uses, not just wiping tires off asphalt.

The FE 600 E is good on the pitch, he knows this spartanism. Driving feeling is good, a bit unusual. With a mass distribution that moves the center of gravity further forward, cornering stability is good, so lowering the front wheel is a more alien habit.

On the other hand, at low cornering speeds, the rider feels as though the bike is heavier than usual. The combination of the center of gravity and a fairly rigid frame gives the Berg more flexibility in less technically challenging terrain, as is usually the case in speed trials (meadows, forest trails ...), but when it comes to terrain where only 1 or 2 gears are used, history is accurate. to the other way around.

Most impressive is the braking power! KTM for 2000 has exactly the same brakes (corrugated around the disc). In fact, Husaberg shares many components with the KTM (front fender, headlight, steering wheel, levers, switches, clutch), only the engine is completely different, although it served as the basis for the Austrian engineers.

The power of the serial engine is quite favorably distributed over the entire rev range. The powerful motor, otherwise very well maintained, pulls very “down” and hits only from above. However, for a stiffer response (in other words: more racing) it would be interesting to try a larger rear sprocket. But riders will have to fight it! For a wider range of motorcyclists, Berg is quite satisfied - a Viking with a benevolent character.

It's good that he also came to our land along with Husqvarna, KTM, Suzuki and Yamaha, who are the only ones with a tough enduro program at the moment. But soon time will tell what place it occupies in the circle of off-road enthusiasts. The representative of the Ski & Sea company from Celje emphasizes that the service is guaranteed - we hope that it will also work!
