Hyundai i20 1.4 CVVT Style

In fact, she didn't yawn. All this time, it was filled to some extent with Getz, a small (but not the smallest) Hyundai car, which was well received by the Slovenes upon arrival. The kid - at that time it was 2002 - did not bring anything revolutionary, only visible progress compared to its predecessor and an interesting or reasonable price.

And something similar can be written this time. The i20 is not one of those cars you can't sleep on. And not one of those with which it is worth standing in front of neighbors or in the company of friends. With it, you will continue to remain unnoticed. This doesn't mean it won't help you.

Something for sure; If the Koreans have not yet been able to interest potential buyers, then after the new one, obviously, everything will be different. On the road, the i20 feels even nicer than in the photos, more consistent than you might expect, and, above all, it sets an example for many competitors of what modern design trends dictate. By the way, does the new Hyundai inadvertently remind you of the Corso? Do not be surprised. Rüsselsheim is a city just a few kilometers from Frankfurt, where Opel comes from …

and where Hyundai also has its own design center. Yes, there are not many coincidences in life. But don't let this worry you. The matching grip design and the same measured height from the ground are too low to replace the Hyundai with a Corsa. The I20 is definitely shorter (about six centimeters), slightly narrower and above all has a slightly longer wheelbase.

You won't notice it with the naked eye (only an inch and a half difference), but the data shows something else - it should offer plenty of room inside, like the Corsa.

When you open the door, the Corsa resemblance finally fades. The interior is definitely unique and, more surprisingly, is just as cute as the exterior. Logical and easy-to-read gauges are now highlighted in red, just like the buttons.

The LCDs are colored orange, the space around the vents and center console, where the audio system and in the test case is an automatic air conditioning, is surrounded by metal plastic, a three-spoke steering wheel with buttons and an interestingly designed lower bar a few light years from where we are. accustomed to Hyundai to this day, and finally, there is now more light on the ceiling than there was before.

The correct one, which would be intended only for the passenger and would not interfere with the driver, is not yet available, but still. Many will also be bothered by the tough and low-quality plastics found in more well-known competitors, as is the case with decorative plastics that want to resemble metal but don't work well, but before you start to tarnish, look at the seats and the inner wall.

The blue fabric is meant to enliven the interior, which, admittedly, thrives on it. However, if you take a closer look, you will find that the blue color is not only the patterns on the seats, but also the seams.

And if we talk about the seats, then for them or. at least for the front ones, they are comfortable, with a little less side grip than we would like, well regulated, but not above average. First of all, we blame them for being too high up, which makes the seating less comfortable than you'd expect.

Fortunately, when designing the interior, the engineers thought about tall people and measured out enough space in the front. Even for those whose height exceeds 185 centimeters, which cannot be confirmed by adult passengers who will have to sit in the back seat. There is much less space and fewer crates to swallow small items. If there are enough of them for the driver and front passenger, we indicated only the rear net on the back of the front passenger seat.

Speaks better with the trunk. This one is decently large (depending on the car class of course), nicely designed, with storage boxes underneath and expandable thanks to a foldable and divisible rear bench. But be careful: don't expect a completely flat bottom anyway. The problem is the collapsed back, forming a ladder that you have to put up with.

Otherwise, you won't buy an i20 to carry your packages with you. For this, other brands have specially modified models with labels Van, Express, Service, etc. Moreover, it is worth paying attention to the correct choice of engine and equipment set. And if you thought this job would be easy, you were wrong.

The engine lineup also testifies to how much the i20 wants to stand side by side with its European competitors. It has seven brand new engines, and if we forget the two main ones, the 1.2 DOHC (57 kW / 78 "horsepower") and the 1.4 CRDi LP (55 kW / 75 "horsepower"), which seem to mostly satisfy the less demanding , we can tell everyone else that they completely ignore the requirements and weight of the car.

The i20 we tested was powered by a 1-liter petrol engine that sits in the middle of the power range, but is far from underpowered. CVVT technology provides satisfactory flexibility in the lower working area and surprisingly lively in the upper one (as evidenced by its healthy sound and joy of spinning), while never exceeding ten liters per hundred kilometers.

The gearbox impressed us even more. If you think about it, these are not six steps. And also not robotic and not automatic. In fact, this is a perfectly normal five-speed gearbox, but it has nothing to do with the ones we have known at Hyundai until now. Shifting is smooth and surprisingly precise. The lever fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, and even when the movements of the right hand become faster, it still obediently follows them.

Make no mistake: it still cannot be compared to a Honda or a Beemve, but the progress is clear nonetheless. It's the same with the chassis. Due to the longer wheelbase, swallowing irregularities is generally more pleasant and comfortable thanks to the wider tracks (basic chassis design and tire size remained unchanged compared to Getz), and now the position is more secure, above which if you want to pay extra for the Style package , also looks at ESP.

It is this package (Style) of equipment, which is considered the richest in the i20, that also conjures up the feeling you want to experience on the inside.

For this you will have to pay about a thousand euros compared to the Comfort equipment (it is included in the standard equipment of this engine), but in addition to the basic safety accessories (ABS, EBD, ISOFIX, four airbags, two curtain airbags inside) and comfort (air conditioning, radio, CD and MP3 player, electric mirrors and front windows ...) offered in the basic Life package (i20 1.2 DOHC), electrically heated and folding outside mirrors, fog lights, leather on the steering wheel and gear lever, USB connection (Comfort equipment) , on-board computer, alarm, power windows for the rear windows, steering wheel buttons, interior trim and chrome grille (Comfort +), plus ESP, six speakers instead of four, automatic air conditioning and lightweight 15-inch wheels.

If where, then in the end it seems that the typical Korean i20 remains only on the list of accessories. This one is just incredibly short compared to the competition. This includes surcharges for metallic or mineral paint, colored or leather upholstery, power sunroof, parking sensors, navigation system (Garmin), roof rack, automatic transmission, tire pressure monitoring system, rubber mats and aluminum wheels.

But it should be taken at best forever. Firstly, because everything else is already included in the equipment packages, and secondly, because the surcharges are incredibly affordable. By far the most expensive is the leather upholstery, for which Hyundai charges 650 euros.

Overall rating (305/420)

  • For almost every new model that comes with Hyundai conveyors, we usually write that it has progressed compared to the previous one. But of all this, the i20 seems to be the most correct. The car not only has a more beautiful shape and improved technology, but also more safety and comfort. So the only question is whether you like his image.

  • Exterior (12/15)

Hyundai's new design guidelines have already been announced for the i10 and i30, and the i20 only confirms them. The workmanship is exemplary.

  • Interior (84/140)

There is plenty of room in the front, a little less in the back, the hard plastic is a concern, and the rich equipment available for a reasonable price is soothing.

  • Engine, transmission (53

    / 40)

The i20 is brand new as far as technology is concerned. We were particularly pleasantly surprised by the gearbox, which has clearly improved.

  • Driving performance (56

    / 95)

With a longer wheelbase and wider tracks, the driving dynamics are (almost) fully comparable to European competitors.

  • Performance (20/35)

Although the engine is in the middle of the offer, it fully meets the needs of the i20. Even when you want a little more from him.

  • Security (41/45)

Most of the accessories are already offered as standard, ESP is available at an additional cost and is standard on the most expensive set of equipment.

  • Economy

Technological and design advancements of course also mean a higher price point, but the i20 is still considered affordable.
