Hyundai i40 Wagon 1.7 CRDi HP Impression

The best connoisseurs of automotive events, of course, already know that Hyundai gave the previous Sonata a new name - i40. It was actually a bug that the Koreans will probably fix in the next generation, and the i40's successor will probably again be the Sonata (remaining for the Korean and US market). With a completely vague mix of letters and numbers, they didn't do themselves a favor.

However, the i40 surprised with its baptism with many features that were not previously a hallmark of Hyundai cars. The i40 has raised the standard of expectation with its quality, interesting and good looks, satisfying mechanics and more. In the updated version, all of this has been expanded and smoothed out a bit, so in terms of what it offers the driver and passengers, it continues to perform quite convincingly. They have now also added several more advanced electronic devices (for example, to the parking assist system, it also helps maintain the direction of travel in the lane).

The engine also feels a lot less durable than the 1,7-litre model at the beginning of its "career" that it started right in the i40. At least there is less noise in the cabin (turbo diesel). The reliability of this engine is now known to many, as it is used in various models of both brands of the South Korean concern, that is, Hyundai and Kia. However, the conclusion suggests itself that fuel economy is a relative issue. Slightly smaller displacement and more power (similar to that provided by competitors' two-litre engines) come at a cost, average consumption isn't exactly part of the i40's specs. This is especially true if we are trying to save fuel with a car (for example, in our circle of norms), while the average consumption during normal use is actually not so bad at all. When the new generation i40 went on sale, Hyundai had some pretty big sales plans in Europe.

But times have changed dramatically. Many upper-middle-class competitors, as well as flirting with crossover buyers in a similar price range, crossed well with their sales plans. The ambitious higher pricing policy for the i40 has not changed yet, so the Slovenian importer cannot afford the promotional prices of some i40 competitors. Thus, the i40 is now one of the more expensive ones compared to serious competitors such as Passat Variant, Škoda Superb, Ford Mondeo or Toyota Avesis, of course with similar equipment. In fact, this is the biggest surprise, which we also wrote about in the title. Of course, buyers don't care where the European Hyundai gets its cars from. Because the i40 is made in Korea, this also results in a less competitive price compared to models made in Europe. Buyers will not be able to expect only good prices from the Hyundai brand in the future. The I40 is a good example - a great car, but also at a reasonable price.
