Nextmove's YouTube profile tested a Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona Electric on the motorway between Leipzig and Munich, Germany. The effect was quite unexpected, despite the identical powertrains, the heavier Kia should have been slightly better than the Hyundai.

The tests were carried out on a 400 km stretch of motorway. The winner was to be the vehicle that reaches its destination (Munich) with a less discharged battery. Both cars had winter tires, the experiment was carried out in January at temperatures ranging from -1 to -7 degrees Celsius. The wind was changing.

Although only one driver tells us, we expect both cars to have the same parameters: heating at 19 degrees Celsius, heated steering and seats (if necessary), cruise control at 120 km / h in Konie Electric and 123 km / h in Kia e. “Nero, but the physical speed of both machines was the same. The cars were running in normal mode ("Normal", not "Eco"), and only the driver's seat was heated in the Konie Electric.

At the time of takeoff, the cars had 97 and 98 percent battery power - it is not known exactly how much - so at a distance we will pay attention to the average energy consumption and test summary.

Halfway: e-Niro outperforms Kona Electric

After 230 km, when the energy began to run out, the testers decided to go to the charging station. Here's what the results were read:

  1. Kia e-Niro: Energy consumption 22,8 kWh (average) with 61 km remaining
  2. Hyundai Kona Electric: Energy consumption 23,4 kWh / 100 km (combined) and 23 km remaining range.

Thus, the Kia, although larger, consumed less energy and gave the driver more control (more range). The difference of 38 kilometers between cars is difficult to explain by the different battery charge levels (97 versus 98 percent), which we mentioned at the beginning.

Both cars started charging at just over 50kW, then they accelerated to 70kW, only to keep only 75kW at 36 percent.

On the second leg of the route, this time 170 km long, the drivers exchanged cars, switched on the "Winter mode" and increased the temperature in the cabin by 1 degree. Interesting, when the head tester driver changed from Kony Electric to e-Niro, the cabin got louder... Whether it is a recording with a different camera, the impact of blown vents, or finally road noise is difficult to tell, but the difference is noticeable.

The final

Although the trip to Munich was planned, the finish line was the charging station in Furholzen, near the Bavarian capital. The cars showed there:

  • Kia e-Niro: 22,8 kWh / 100 km average power consumption, 67 km remaining range and 22% battery.
  • Hyundai Kona Electric: Average energy consumption 22,7 kWh / 100 km, 51 km remaining range and 18 percent battery.

The summary says that The Kia e-Niro was 1 percent better for every 100 kilometers, which is 400 kilometers better by 4 percent.. It doesn't say exactly which is "better," but it's safe to assume it's the best remaining range on a case-by-case basis - however, after 400 kilometers, the Kona Electric proved to be more economical than the e-Niro. .

However, it is easy to see that in both measurements the e-Niro offered more residual coverage... You can blame the drivers for this, but the cars drove at a distance, also set by the cruise control. It is therefore difficult to impress, other than that the electric Kia performs better than the Hyundai.

Bonus: Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia e-Niro - real winter mileage

From the data presented in the video, another interesting conclusion can be drawn: at 120 km / h and a little frost, both cars will have almost the same power reserve. This will amount to up to 280 kilometers without recharging. The maximum value depends on the capacity of the battery - the car's systems will probably reduce the power of the car and order to connect to the charger as soon as possible after driving about 250-260 kilometers.

For comparison: the actual range of the Hyundai Kona Electric in good conditions is 415 kilometers. Kia e-Niro promises about 384 km.the final data are not yet known. According to the WLTP procedure, cars must travel “up to 485” and “up to 455” km, respectively.
