What are the parts of an engineer's scraper?
Content
On some scrapers, the handle, shaft and blade are combined into one piece, while others have removable blade tips and handles.
The scraper shaft is made of steel. With scrapers where the blade is built into the shaft, the entire shaft will be made of high speed steel (HSS), although only the end of the shaft that forms the blade will be heat treated and tempered into true high speed steel.
Removable scraper blades are made of high speed steel or tungsten carbide, which is even harder than high speed steel.
Scraper handle material
The scraper handle can be made from either plastic or wood. Plastic scraper handles are molded onto the scraper shaft or blade, while wooden handles are more commonly designed to be screwed onto the metal scraper shaft.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of plastic and wooden handles?Unlike plastic handles, wood handles are often replaceable. They can also be sanded down to smoothness if splinters form on them, or for a better grip. Plastic handles are less likely to chip or crack, but if they do, they will be harder to flatten again. |
