How to Get a Chevrolet Dealer Certificate

If you're mechanically inclined and want to put your skills to work as an automotive technician, becoming a Certified Chevrolet Dealer could be the key to success in your new career. GM vehicles, and Chevrolet in particular, are among the best-selling vehicles in the US today, and dealerships and service centers are constantly looking for qualified technicians who can inspect, diagnose, repair, and service these vehicles.

Of course, you will need to show potential employers - or clients if you work at an independent repair shop - that you are well versed in Chevrolet vehicles. The best way to do this is to get a Chevrolet Dealer Certificate, and you can do it in one of three ways:

  • Take a GM certification course at a technical institute.
  • Take a GM ASEP (Automotive Service Education Program) course
  • Complete one or more GM Fleet or GM Service Technical College (CTS) technical training courses.

The first two of these options will introduce you to all GM brands, including Chevrolet. The second one can be customized to focus on specific models and brands according to your needs.

Chevrolet Certification at the Technical Institute

GM has partnered with technical institutes such as the Universal Technical Institute to offer students a 12-week Chevrolet Dealer Certification program, as well as familiarization and certification for all other GM vehicles.

Over the course of 12 weeks, you'll spend time in a classroom, online courses and additional online resources, and hands-on activities to help you get the most out of your new knowledge of Chevrolet vehicles. Some of the areas you will learn about include but are not limited to:

  • HVAC
  • brakes
  • Engine repair
  • Steering and suspension
  • Electrical systems and electronics
  • Diesel engine performance
  • Maintenance and inspection

GM ASEP Training for Chevrolet Certification

If your primary goal is to work at a Chevrolet dealership or ACDelco service center, your best bet is to take the GM ASEP course, an intensive program designed to help students get a job as a GM auto mechanic. In this program, you will combine relevant academic coursework with practical training and internships. This program is specifically designed to prepare students to become effective automotive technicians for all GM brands and will help you become a Certified Chevrolet Dealership Technician as quickly as possible.

Since the GM ASEP program is a joint venture between GM dealerships, GM and ACDelco Professional Service Centers, finding a program near you is not difficult, especially if you live in an area with several dealerships nearby.

GM Fleet Technical Training for Chevrolet Vehicles

Finally, you may need a Chevrolet dealer certification to become the best automotive technician in your own independent workshop or to service and repair the company's fleet of vehicles. If so, then you may want to consider GM Fleet technical training.

GM Fleet classes are conveniently taught on site and the reasonably priced private lessons are $215 per student per day. Whether you're just looking for specific information about a particular model, such as the Chevrolet Impala police package, or you need help with a specific system, such as HVAC, separate sessions make sense. If you are looking for more general information that will help you become familiar with all Chevrolet models, you can choose the GM Service Technical College, which will include several classes and a more intensive curriculum.

Whatever you choose, becoming a Certified Chevrolet Dealership Technician can only strengthen your skills and knowledge and help you move forward to get the best auto mechanic job as you build your career.
