Which engineering scraper to choose?
Content
Blade type | |
The scraper you need will be determined by the stock you need to scrape and the finish you want to achieve. While a triangular scraper can be used for most cleaning tasks, flat and curved blade scrapers can often be faster and easier for certain cleaning tasks.
A curved blade scraper is best for curved surfaces such as the insides of bearings or cylinders, while a flat blade scraper is best for flat surfaces and for applying a matte finish to a cleaned surface.
Scraper size | |
TThe size of the scraper used will depend on the following factors:
Scraper length and widthThe size of an engineer's scraper usually refers to its length, which is measured from the tip of the blade to the base of the handle. Engineering scrapers can range in length from 100 mm (4 in) to 430 mm (17 in), the longer ones are used primarily for glazes, while the smaller ones are often used for cleaning hard to reach and hard to reach areas of the workpiece. The scraper blade width can vary from 20mm (3/4″) to 30mm (1-1/4″) approx. Wider scraper blades are used for coarse initial scraping, while narrower scraper blades are used for finer work.
Body type and personal preferenceGenerally, someone who is taller will have longer arms and will need a longer scraper, just as a taller cricketer will typically use a larger bat.
The type of scraper you are usingIf you are cleaning tight spaces, such as inside a bearing with a curved blade scraper, you may need a shorter scraper than if you were cleaning a flat plate with a flat blade scraper. If you are using a triangular scraper to scrape to the edge or corner of a flat surface, it should be the same length as the flat blade scraper. Likewise, it should be shorter and about the same size as a curved blade scraper if used on a curved surface.
Frost, flaking or scrapingMatting or peeling a surface usually requires the use of a longer scraper than scraping a surface, due to the technique required for matting.
personal preferenceChoosing the size of scraper you want to use is a balance between these factors and, most importantly, personal preference as there is no point in using a scraper you don't feel comfortable with. |
