Maintenance and care of the engineering area

Cleaning

Like all precision instruments, engineering squares require careful maintenance and care to keep them accurate and prevent damage.

Since engineering squares are made of steel, it is important that they remain dry to prevent them from rusting. After use, wipe off any moisture or liquid, such as marking ink, from your engineering square with a soft cloth.

This will help prevent atmospheric moisture from rusting on the surface of your engineering square when not in use.

Storage

Maintenance and care of the engineering areaEngineer's squares should be kept separate from other tools to minimize the risk of damage to the blade or stock. As well as reduce the chance that they will receive hits that could affect their accuracy. One of the best ways to do this is to use a storage case.

Cases can also be purchased separately or made on your own, and many have a form-fitting foam rubber interior that provides superior insulation against any bumps and bumps that could damage or affect the accuracy of your engineering square.

Calibration

Maintenance and care of the engineering areaEngineer's squares should be checked regularly to ensure they maintain their accuracy. If they are inaccurate, they should be corrected and calibrated. Engineering squares must be calibrated once every five years by a UKAS accredited company who will issue you with a certificate confirming the accuracy of your square.
