What does this mean?

This Generic Powertrain Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is commonly applied to many OBD-II vehicles. This may include, but is not limited to, vehicles from Land Rover, Ford, Alfa Romeo, Toyota, etc.

When your OBD-II equipped vehicle shows a stored code P000F, it means that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected excessive fuel pressure and the overpressure relief valve has been activated.

If there are fuel volume regulator codes or fuel pressure regulator codes, you should diagnose and repair them before attempting to diagnose the P000F. Actuation of the overpressure relief valve in the fuel system is most likely a response to a malfunction in the fuel pressure control system.

Today's clean diesel vehicles require extreme fuel pressure to function properly. In my personal experience, I have never encountered a fuel system pressure relief valve on anything other than diesel vehicles.

The overpressure relief valve is usually located in the fuel supply line or on the fuel rail. This is an electronically controlled valve that uses a solenoid as an actuator. The valve will have inlet and outlet lines as well as a return hose that allows excess fuel to return to the tank (without spilling) whenever the valve is activated.

The PCM receives an input from the fuel pressure sensor whenever the vehicle is in the key position with the engine running (KOER). If this input reflects that the fuel pressure exceeds the programmed limit, the PCM will activate the fuel system through the relief valve, the valve will open, the excess pressure will be released and a small amount of fuel will be diverted back to the fuel tank. ...

After the PCM detects an overpressure condition and the relief valve has been activated, a P000F code will be stored and a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate. It may take multiple ignition failures to illuminate the MIL.

What is the severity of this DTC?

Accurate fuel system pressure is critical for optimum engine performance and efficiency. The stored code P000F should be considered serious.

What are some of the symptoms of the code?

Symptoms of a P000F engine code may include:

  • Delayed start or no start
  • General lack of engine power
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Other fuel system codes or misfire codes

What are some of the common causes for the code?

Reasons for this code may include:

  • Defective fuel pressure sensor
  • Defective fuel pressure regulator
  • Defective fuel volume regulator
  • Dirty fuel filter
  • PCM error or PCM programming error

What are some steps to troubleshoot the P000F?

Once I have access to the diagnostic scanner, I would start by retrieving all stored codes and freeze frame data from the vehicle. Make a note of this information because it may come in handy later. Now I would clear the codes and test drive the car (if possible) to see if it is reset.

If the code is reset, you will need a reliable source of vehicle information, a pressure gauge with adapters, and a digital volt / ohmmeter (DVOM).

Inspect all system components, electrical wiring and fuel lines. Make sure fuel lines are not kinked or squashed and repair if necessary.

Check Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that may match the P000F, the symptom presented, and the vehicle in question. The right TSB can save you hours of diagnostic time.

Then I would check the fuel pressure manually. Be very careful when checking high pressure fuel systems. The pressure can exceed 30,000 psi.

Fuel pressure within specification:

Use the DVOM to check the reference voltage and ground at the fuel pressure sensor connector. A reliable source of vehicle information will provide specifications and test procedures, as well as wiring diagrams and connector types. If no reference is found, check the appropriate circuit at the PCM connector. If no voltage reference is found there, suspect a defective PCM or a PCM programming error. If a reference voltage is found at the PCM connector, suspect an open or short circuit between the PCM and the sensor. If reference voltage and ground are present, use the DVOM to test the fuel pressure sensor. Again, a good source of vehicle information (like AllData DIY) will provide you with manufacturer specifications and sensor testing procedures.

Fuel pressure NOT within specification:

I suspect the fuel pressure regulator or fuel volume regulator is defective. Use DVOM to inspect individual components and repair as needed.

Diagnose and repair other fuel system codes before attempting to diagnose the P000F.
