In the village, I regularly patrol the borders, springs and meadows. For a long time I no longer care if someone puts barrels with chemical cow parsnip, fried stoenko, batteries in a stream or forest. I also do not like to look at the pipe of Italian (Avan) tourists who, without orders or greetings, occupy every forest path and clear the forest of chestnuts and mushrooms.

They hold the memories of Benito's time that they were masters. And since three thousand refugees walk around green Slovenia a month, I am also seriously worried about what is happening behind my back. Also behind the neighbor, as it can happen to both of us, we find a broken front door and washed boxes. The Americans have organized a "neighborhood watch" and keep an eye on each other's property, children and others that are too far from our eyes and the police.

Well, that's the point of this test, and with it the story that comes with such a light and agile four-wheeler that doesn't even have an official name in Slovenia. ATV is the English abbreviation for "multi-purpose all-terrain vehicle". According to the locals, this is a multi-tasking "beetle", "tractor" or, more simply, "that miracle", as you say at the end, when nothing smarter escapes the tongue.

ATVs are tamed all over the world. Of course, not in cities, because there is nothing to do here. Ideal in the countryside. On the outskirts of the city, where the garage borders on a meadow, forest, field. People who are able to rationally spend their time and energy have found in the ATV a tool that makes life and work easier. Just like good shoes, you need a sharp knife, an electric drill. And a cell phone. There is no life without technology.

But Slovenes don't know ATVs. Neither the police nor the army, although they also drive a lot off-road. Let's say on a green border. But old life stereotypes are still all too common: for example, electricians choose to cut paths in the forest and break rocks with a construction machine to open the way for a truck to a power line. With the ATV and trailer attached, we made it to the wires so the deer didn't even know about them.

So you can draw a conclusion when you consume several tanks of gasoline with an ATV. Only by solving everyday problems, you understand that you no longer need a car; so that you no longer bother your neighbor in time and the tractor. You have outstretched legs.

You attach the necessary luggage to the trunks, hop onto the ATV and turn it directly into the desired place. During the test, it rained so much that bad roads from rubble turned into impassable troughs. From wort, apples, mushroom season to frost and the first inches of snow, I've had the opportunity to experience the benefits of a design that combines a tractor, SUV, work machine, and motorcycle.

Driver position! They can sit, they can stand. As on a horse, only more comfortable. Only with your feet and only on pedals with a wide mesh so that the driver does not run over himself. On any unevenness, feeling low on the ATV and low on the ground is better and safer than on a tractor or inside a leaning SUV. Advantages are expressed over an SUV that is too expensive and too inconvenient for a person to pass between sharp stones, trunks, deep wheels, penetrating mud and deceptive descents.

A Yamaha ATV is narrow enough to ride tractor or truck wheels! Because he sits on the ATV like a motorcycle, keeping the balance of the vehicle is a toy by moving the body and thereby transferring the weight. Even a less talented driver learns the task in half an hour. Therefore, ATVs are rented abroad to tourists and park visitors. Also for driving around golf courses.

The bike's handlebars provide good traction while supporting your body on the open road and in tight corners. The ATV is capable of overcoming slopes and cracks that frighten the driver before the technician fails. However, without risk, these angles are more difficult to measure. The ATV descends a steep slope where blood freezes. Take perpendicular direction only, move the body as high as possible over the rear wheels and start descending in the lowest gear with a feeling of braking. As long as the wheels do not slide over the mud like a sled in the snow, the ATV rides elegantly like a spider. Riding uphill requires sharpening the senses.

What matters is that the gear in the drivetrain is low enough to have enough power to the wheels, forward movement of the body, and as little brutality as possible. Because when they crash into a hill, they find themselves on their backs with a man and a car. When driving off-road, it is always important to look at the route first and approach it carefully. Otherwise, it happens that the driver, including the ATV, is carried away by the water if the depth of the stream at the crossing exceeds 35 centimeters. Low pressure tires, tank and ATV are simply switched off in (too) deep water.

What do the unbreakable plastic wings with curtains on all sides actually cover? Beneath the plastic is a cage cut out of steel that houses the engine, seat, wheels and up to 165kg of cargo. The front end rests on individually suspended wheels. So on triangular rails and spring legs - like a simpler car. At the rear, it has a rigid bridge with cardan power transmission. This assembly is supported by a swing fork and a mid-mounted shock absorber. That looks like a motorcycle. From the automotive industry comes a single-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled engine with a carburetor, which received an automatic clutch and a five-speed motorcycle-style gearbox. So, there is no clutch lever, the gearbox is controlled by the left foot: idling - at the beginning of the movement of the gear lever; gears replace each other as follows: N-1-2-3-4-5. Green light indicates inactivity. Reverse, which is activated by a special lever on the left side of the engine, is red. The ignition key controls the ignition electricity and the light. There are no sensors. Even for fuel. But the consumption is small, so one container is incredibly enough.

The location of the brake levers also makes it easy to drive over rough terrain. The right lever on the steering wheel controls the two front drum brakes, the left lever on the steering wheel activates the rear drum brake. Which he can do at the same time or just with his right foot, since the braids from the lever and from the pedal lead to the same brake. A very good idea that turns out when the rider has to work too much on the balance on bumps. The braking is effective and strong enough that the wheels are difficult to lock, and therefore the ATV does not deflect to the other side. There is also a buckle on the left arm that can be used to park the ATV on a slope.

The 220-pound machine, which a regularly nursing man can lift off the ground from the front or rear like the Krpan with his keel, is as maneuverable as the bush dwellers, thanks to its favorable weight, reverse gear, high maneuverability and wide tires. that literally float through the terrain.

Only rear-wheel drive has no restrictions. The slightly more expensive (and more powerful) Big Bear or Kodiak ATV has four-wheel drive. It also makes it easier to get out of steep ditches or across a ditch bank.

It is hard to believe that 230 cubic centimeters gives enough power to overcome even the slopes on which the tractor driver gives up. The ATV turns at a speed of about 65 kilometers per hour, which is already very fast due to the rigid connection of the wheels, therefore it is not recommended to drive on asphalt: kneading the tires while turning can lead to the ATV knocking an inexperienced driver into a ditch. ... In any case, it is good to read very good operating instructions and increase the difficulty of driving.

Even at minus ten degrees Celsius, the engine starts the first time. In the event of a battery failure, there is also an automatic ignition on the left side of the engine. Like a chainsaw. He immediately grabs the gas with his right thumb. A well-heated engine spins up to seven thousandths, but such acceleration is not necessary. Power and torque are distributed so that ground travel is smoothest with the first half of the throttle. The fact that it has an automatic clutch is not felt at all while driving. The sound of the engine is calm, muffled.

During the test, I drove on very impossible routes with specials in a ratio of 1: 25.000 XNUMX. I had to ask local hunters for directions and transitions, and despite the mostly rainy weather, we returned every time on a quad bike with a powerful engine. I want to note that I have never walked or pushed. Even from very remote and forgotten ravines, to which people, before the war, loading grain into the mills on their backs, could only get to on foot. But if I still had a small winch on the front bumper, it would be interesting until the end!

It turned out that you can visit large areas quickly and without much effort. In short, it is with great pleasure that man has control over his environment. And so he sees that even in the difficult depths we already have a terribly neglected landscape. Plastic pails of forest "biodegradable oils" and beer cans are just a tiny example of the neglect of the environment we live in.
