Mercedes-Benz ML 270 CDI

At the time, of course, he seemed fantastic to us, like the actors from Jurassic Park - dinosaurs. How interesting, no one has ever seen them, and they all seem so obvious.

The situation is completely different with machine learning. Everyone saw him, and everyone behind him sighed: "Ah, Mercedes ..." Well, after a while everything becomes more realistic and vivid. ML was just one of the offerings of off-road limousines, more limousines than SUVs to be completely honest. But he succeeds everywhere.

In the 270 CDI, the diesel engine was also introduced for the first time in the Mercedes ML. It is a newly developed five-cylinder engine with four-valve technology above each piston, direct fuel injection via a common line, and air supply is provided by a variable turbine (VNT) exhaust gas with a charge air cooler.

Basically, such an ML is equipped with a new six-speed manual transmission, and the test one is equipped with a five-speed automatic. Of course the latest generation and with the possibility of manual switching. Scrolling left down (-) and right (+) up. Everything is electronically controlled, so there can be no error at all. In fact, this gearbox is already so good (smooth and fast) that there is no need for manual shifting. Of course, it will come in handy when going down a hill slowly or when the driver gets bored. .

With a favorable torque (400 Nm!), The engine operates sovereignly even at low revs, and the gearbox shifts to an increased speed of about 4000 rpm. Despite the car's light weight, the engine is good enough for multi-purpose use. It works well in slow driving, in the field and on expressways. He develops a high speed of movement, while remaining sufficiently quiet and calm.

At high speeds, you just need to come to terms with the fact that the consumption increases by several liters, which in general is not so much. With moderate driving, you can even come close to the plant declared consumption, which is below the magic limit of ten liters. Of course, the size of the car, the rich equipment and comfort, and, just as important, the reputation should also be considered. The expense is probably not even that important.

Even the hefty amount of money required to equip this off-road beauty is not important. For a gearbox, 500 thousand, for disks 130 thousand, for paint 200 thousand, for an interior package 800 thousand, and so on until the final price, which is already significantly different from the base one. But with cars like this, price is probably the last thing more importantly, what the driver's feel is. Feelings, of course, are excellent.

As soon as you enter (at night), the Mercedes-Benz sign will turn blue on the doorstep. This way, you don't even doubt where you are entering. The passenger (co) is even more impressed. High seating position, pleasant fair skin, electric adjustment in all directions, not to mention heated seats and soft carpets. ... All of this comes at a cost, but it also pays off on an ongoing basis.

Every time you get into the car, you can be satisfied. Note that fair skin can stain too. And don't forget that the steering wheel levers are the same as on the Sprinter. Overall, however, ML works pretty well. If I ignored a few awkward, scattered and illogical switches on the center console, I might get too emotionally attached to this beauty. So let's not forget that this is just one of the machines.

Just one of them? Yes, but one of the best. It's quick and convenient on the expressway, but also useful in the field. The electronically coupled gearbox only follows the driver's instructions when completely stationary. Then a light press of a button is enough and you're done. The transmission is automatic anyway, and we have nothing to worry about. It doesn't have the classic differential locks, but it does have some very useful electronic replacements.

They work automatically via the ABS braking system. When he discovers that one or more wheels are spinning too fast, he slows them down. Simple and effective. In extreme conditions, of course, one could doubt such a system, but for us mere mortals and machine learning, who rarely see real terrain, this has more than enough, and also works reliably.

Therefore, it is childishly easy to control such a "monster". This is also one of the good things we attribute to modern cars. But take your time, SUVs are not omnipotent either. Keep in mind that someday you also need to stop somewhere. Maybe that's why dinosaurs became extinct?

evaluation

  • Even with this diesel engine, the Mercedes ML has plenty of motorization. Of course, one must take into account the rich (and expensive) equipment, not to mention the varnish, so off-road is just an emergency exit. Even though it is technically excellent.
