We drove: Can-Am Trail 2018

It is a mixture of the X3 and classic four-wheelers. It is designed for slower driving, but at the same time allows sports flashes, is significantly cheaper and narrower, only 127 centimeters wide, almost the same as a four-wheeled vehicle, so it can be driven even where conventional SUVs cannot. ... (or in the US) shouldn't), but above all, this width provides the best balance between practicality, comfort, affordability, price, ease, and enjoyment.

To put it bluntly, the trail is a four-wheeled vehicle with a steering wheel, a roof and seats. It retains the fun, performance, and size of ATVs while only making it more convenient and practical. It is not only about a more comfortable position for the driver in the car, but also about the comfort of the front passenger. Despite the parallel landing, the manufacturer claims that the custom cabin is 95 percent of all North Americans. Even if someone feels cramped in a pipe cage, they should be aware that they are sitting significantly more comfortably than on a quad bike. The luggage compartment is also relatively large, i.e. a 20-liter box on the armature and a "large" luggage compartment with a maximum load of up to 136 kg.

Can-am already has (in addition to the sporty Mavercic X3) the Commander and Traxter models with steering wheel, roof and seats, but the Traxter is a work machine and the Commander is 147 centimeters wider than for many wilderness drives. or classic slides. The track is only 10 inches wider than four-wheelers and has a hint of the Maverick's sporty DNA, bridging both worlds in the combination of SSV comfort and ATV agility. At least theoretically. In practical testing in a corner of the Cypriot mountains on the Akamas peninsula, concerns were raised that lateral stability at that latitude was insufficient for drifting flashes, and higher speeds were lost in dust clouds behind the vehicle. The narrow road became surprisingly wide due to the small width of the track and surprisingly fast driving. And even with all-wheel drive off, with the 75-litre powerplant giggling only on the rear wheelset, the 127cm-wide Trail remained sovereign on all fours.

Wheels located entirely at the edges (with a wheelbase of 230 cm) really provide more stability and control when driving, as well as a load distribution on the front and rear axles in a ratio of 42: 58. And since here we cannot compensate for the tilt, as in in the case of a four-wheeled vehicle with its own weight, this is even more important. In practice, this is also evident in more stable driving, where most Trail users will not come close to the limits of use. If you want a racing experience, your big brother X3 is for you.

When it comes to “tough off-roading,” Can's well-known and proven ATV transmissions, as well as flat tires, over a quarter meter of shock travel and an automatic front differential lock on four-wheel drive ensure unrestrained performance. Downhill safety is ensured by electronically controlled transmission braking, there is a very high rear air intake when crossing the river, and if we are being driven into the desert or if we like to play at low speeds, we can count on an oversized cooling system. All this, backed up by a gearbox, means unstoppability, even if we opt for the less powerful 800cc version. Cm.
