New VW ID.3 in Germany with higher charging power: 45 to 110 kW, 58 to 120 kW

As previously announced, the German configurator has new, higher charging capacities Volkswagen ID.3. The 45 (48) kWh battery model can now provide up to 110 kW (peak) instead of the previous 50 kW, while the 58 (62) kWh battery version supports up to 120 kW instead of the previous 100 kW.

Higher maximum power means minimum shorter downtime at the charging station

Both values represent maximum and require optimal connection conditions (eg cell temperature) and a suitable charger. The manufacturer's stated charging time from 5 to 80 percent decreased from 38 to 35 minutes (in Polish configurator - 35 minutes for 100 kW, see below). As Nextmove suggests, higher charging power should also be available for owners of older IDs.... The software update should be released this summer, it is possible that it will be paid.

We can easily calculate that maximum charging power for VW ID.3 45 kWh she got up do 2,44 C (2,44 x battery capacity). TO VW ID.3 58 kWh we only have 2,07 C instead of 1,72 C. Does this mean that in the future the 58 kWh variant could be increased even further and reach 141,5 kW (= 2,44 x 58) on chargers? It is not so obvious: the limit here may be the efficiency of the cooling system, as well as the manufacturer's willingness to maintain higher charging power for premium vehicles (eg Audi).

Interestingly, the upgrade only appeared on the VW ID.3 version with the smallest to medium battery. The variant with the largest batteries with a capacity of 77 (82) kWh officially continues to handle up to 125 kW of power and recovers from 5 to 80 percent in 38 minutes. If it were increased to an output level of 58 kWh (2,07 ° C), it would accelerate to 159 kW on the chargers and thus jump over the Audi e-tron.

Currently, only the price of increasing the maximum charging power from 50 to 110 kW in the 45 kWh version is known. In Germany, it is 650 euros, which in Poland would be equivalent to 3 zlotys:
