About the speedometer on the VAZ 2106: from choice to repair

On all cars, the speed of movement is measured by special devices called speedometers. Two types of such devices were installed on the VAZ 2106 in different years, so owners may often have questions regarding checking and repairing the speedometer.
Speedometer VAZ 2106
The speedometer on any car is a device that serves to determine the current speed. In addition, for the convenience of the driver, the device at the same time records the entire mileage of the car from the moment it was released from the assembly line and indicates the mileage for the last day.
The main characteristics of the speedometer on the "six":
- readings from 0 to 180 km/h;
- measured speed - from 20 to 160 km/h;
- gear ratio - 1:1000.
This device is made in a case: it is most convenient to mount the speedometer on the instrument panel of the VAZ 2106 and, if necessary, remove it.
It is curious that the first prototype of the modern speedometer was created back in the 1500s by Leonardo da Vinci himself. This device was used to measure the speed of horse-drawn carriages. And on cars, speedometers began to be installed only in 1901.
What are speedometers
More than a hundred years have passed since 1901. During this time, not only the design features of cars have changed, but also the speedometers themselves. Today it is customary to divide all automotive devices for fixing mileage and measuring driving speed into two main types:
- mechanical action;
- electronic.
Mechanical devices on the VAZ 2106 can only be of the drum type. That is, the indicator is applied to a special drum, which rotates according to the speed of rotation of the wheelset. That is, there is a mechanical connection of the device with the secondary shaft of the gearbox.
There is no such connection in the electronic speedometer. Data on the current speed of movement comes from the speed sensor, which is considered a more accurate reading of the current information.
Why is the speedometer lying?
In fact, even the most modern autospeedometer can distort real speed indicators. Basically, problems are associated with the calibration of the device or with the difference in the operation of different shafts during maneuvers.
The driver needs to know that the main reason for the "deception" of speedometers on the VAZ 2106 is the size of the disks and rubber. The larger the overall diameter of the wheel on the machine, the greater the distance the “six” travels in 1 revolution of the drive shaft. Accordingly, the more mileage the device will show.

According to statistics, speedometers on the VAZ 2106 “lie” at 5–10 km / h. It is because of this feature that manufacturers usually slightly underestimate the calibration of the device so that the device shows slightly lower readings than it actually is.
Mechanical speedometer for VAZ 2106
Mechanical devices are considered as simple as possible, since the essence of their work lies in the connection between the elements of the car. So, a mechanical device on the VAZ 2106 works on the principle of connecting the speedometer needle with the output shaft of the gearbox. The gearbox itself receives the drive force from the rotation of the wheelset. Thus, the arrow receives energy from the wheel of the car and reflects the corresponding value on the instrument scale.
In the cavity of the manual transmission of the "six" there is an output roller on which a gear is put on. The gear rotates on this roller during movement and touches the cable of the device. The cable is a strong cable wrapped in protection. One end of the cable is mounted in the hole of this gear, and the other is connected to the speed meter.
Malfunctions
The mechanical speedometer is good because it is easy to identify malfunctions in its operation and diagnose a malfunction. Conventionally, all possible malfunctions can be divided into two types:
- the speedometer does not show the actual speed of the car;
- the drive part of the device makes a lot of noise.
Reasons for these errors include:
- A general malfunction of the speedometer itself - in this case, you cannot do without replacing the device.
- Loosening the flexible shaft end nuts. In the process of driving on rough roads, the nuts can be unscrewed - just tighten them all the way so that the speedometer starts showing the correct data.
- Breakage of the flexible roller in the checkpoint. This part will need to be replaced.
- Rope damage. It is impossible to restore its integrity, it will have to be changed.
If you look at the statistics of breakdowns of the VAZ 2106 mechanical speedometer, we can conclude that more faults are associated with the cable and can only be eliminated by replacing it.
Repair work
In order to resume the performance of a mechanical speedometer, you will need:
- screwdriver with a flat thin blade;
- passages;
- spanners;
- steel wire with diameter characteristics up to 0.5 mm and length up to 2 meters.
- new drive cable.
Since the drive part of the VAZ 2106 gearbox is mounted at the bottom of the car, you will have to use a pit or overpass for repairs.
The order of work is as follows:
- Securely fix the car in such a position that it is convenient to crawl under it.
- Be sure to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
- Remove the instrument panel in the cabin by prying up the edge of the plastic with a screwdriver and pressing the latches.
- Unscrew the nut that secures the cable to the speedometer device.
- Tie a new wire to the nut.
- Loosen the nut that holds the cable in the gearbox housing.
- Detach the cable from the box.
- Pull the cable towards you, pull it out of the car so that the guide wire tied to the nut replaces the cable.
- Before installing a new cable, it is necessary to lubricate it with "SHRUS" or "Litol".
- Pull the new cable along the wire, and then remove the wire.
- Perform all further steps to fix the cable in reverse order.
Thus, the replacement of the cable can take up to half an hour. In all other cases, it is advisable to immediately replace the speedometer device itself - only a mechanical device can be installed for correct operation.

Electronic speedometer
The trend towards the electrification of vehicles has also affected the domestic auto industry. On more modern VAZ 2107 cars, electronic speedometers were already installed at the factory.
This device is equipped with a magnet that is attached to the output shaft of the manual transmission. In addition, the speedometer also has an electronic unit, so the magnet, rotating around its circumference, passes next to the unit and transmits a signal to it about the speed of rotation of the wheels. That is, the magnet acts as a sensor. In turn, the block calculates the actual speed of the car according to the algorithm and transmits the data to a digital device in the car.
It is believed that electronic speedometers are more accurate than mechanical ones, since due to the operation of the magnet they can read speed readings from 0 km / h.
Malfunctions
Malfunctions in the operation of electronic devices are usually caused by:
- damage to the electronic indicator;
- malfunction of the sensor (magnet);
- poor contact or broken contact between the magnet and the electronic unit.
In turn, these malfunctions lead to the fact that the speedometer begins to “lie” strongly, the indication blinks and displays incorrect information about the speed.
Diagnostics and repair
It will be a little more difficult to restore the functionality of an electronic device than a mechanical one, since special equipment is required in the form of a tester and an oscilloscope (or scanner). You will also need to prepare in advance:
- a cross-blade screwdriver;
- screwdriver with a flat thin blade;
- set of wrenches.
Most often, problems with the operation of an electronic speedometer arise due to moisture or dirt getting onto the terminals. Therefore, the diagnosis should begin with an inspection of the contact connections.
Further, if the contacts are clean, you can proceed to more detailed diagnostics and repairs:
- Inspect wiring for loss of insulation or kinks. If necessary, you will need to replace the wire with a similar one.
- Tester to check the operation of all elements operating in the speed measurement system. A working motion sensor must provide a voltage of at least 9 V and a frequency of 4 to 6 Hz. Otherwise, it is necessary to replace the sensor with a new one (insert the device into the socket).
- The oscilloscope checks the signal strength between the sensor and the unit.

As such, the repair of an electronic speedometer can only consist in its complete replacement, since if all the components and wiring are in order, then replacement is necessary. Changing the device is easy: just undock the dashboard and unscrew the fasteners of the old speedometer.

Thus, the “six” is equipped from the factory with either mechanical or electronic speedometers, each of which rarely fails. As a rule, all breakdowns of these devices are associated with a solid service life and natural wear and tear of the elements.
