AMX-32 is equipped with two types of main armament: 105 mm or 120 mm gun. When installing a 105-mm rifled gun, the transportable ammunition load is 47 rounds. The ammunition used on the AMX-30V2 is suitable for firing from this gun. The machine with a 120-mm smoothbore gun has an ammunition load of 38 shots, 17 of which are located in the turret niche, and the remaining 21 - in the front of the hull next to the driver's seat. This gun is suitable for ammunition produced for the German 120 mm Rheinmetall tank gun. The initial speed of an armor-piercing sub-caliber projectile fired from a 120-mm cannon is 1630 m / s, and a high-explosive - 1050 m / s.
Like other French tanks of that period, the AMX-32 did not have a weapon stabilization system. In both planes, the gun was aimed at the target using 5AMM electro-hydraulic drives. In the vertical plane, the guidance sector was from -8 ° to + 20 °. Additional armament consists of a 20-mm M693 cannon, paired with the gun and located to the left of it, and a 7,62-mm machine gun, mounted on the command characteristics, as the auxiliary armament installed on the AMX-30V2 tank.
The ammunition load of the 20-mm gun is 480 rounds, and the 7,62-mm machine gun - 2150 rounds. In addition, the AMX-32 is equipped with 6 smoke grenade launchers mounted on both sides of the turret. The AMX-32 main battle tank is equipped with the SOTAS fire control system, which includes: a digital ballistic computer, non-illuminated observation and guidance devices, as well as a laser rangefinder connected to them. The crew commander has at his disposal a stabilized M527 sight with 2- and 8-fold magnification in the daytime, mounted on the left side of the TOR 7 V5 commander's cupola. For firing and observing the area at night, a Thomson-S5R camera paired with weapons is installed on the left side of the tower.
The workplaces of the gunner and tank commander are equipped with monitors that display the image transmitted by the camera. The tank commander has the ability to carry out target designation to the gunner or take on his role and fire independently. The gunner has a telescopic sight M581 with a 10x magnification. A laser rangefinder with a range of up to 10000 m is connected to the sight. The data for the shot is calculated by the ballistic computer, which takes into account the target's speed, the vehicle's own speed, the ambient temperature, the type of ammunition, the wind speed, etc.
To maintain a circular view, the crew commander has eight periscopes, and the gunner has three. The absence of a weapon stabilizer is partially offset by sight stabilization, thanks to which the fire control system provides a 90% probability of hitting a stationary target both in the daytime and at night. The standard equipment includes an automatic fire extinguishing system, an air conditioning system, a system for protection against weapons of mass destruction and, finally, equipment for setting up smoke screens. In 1975, work began on the AMX-32 tank in France. It was first shown publicly in 1981. From a constructive point of view, the AMX-32 is very similar to the AMX-30, the main differences relate to weapons, fire control systems and armor. The AMX-32 uses a combined hull and turret armor, consisting of conventional elements - welded armored plates - and composite ones. It should be emphasized that the tower is also welded. Its armor provides reliable protection against projectiles with a caliber of up to 100 mm. Additional protection of the sides of the hull is carried out with the help of steel bulwarks covering the upper branches of the tracks and reaching the axes of the road wheels. Strengthening the reservation led to an increase in its combat weight up to 40 tons, as well as an increase in the specific pressure on the ground up to 0,92 kg / cm2.
