VAZ 2106 (or "six", as this model is popularly called) is a car that went down in the history of AvtoVAZ due to its frenzied popularity. The car gained popularity not only because of its quality and unpretentiousness, but also due to the availability of various transformations. For example, the owner has an option such as replacing the engine with a more productive one. The main thing is to choose the right power unit for your "six" and correctly install it.
What engines is the VAZ 2106 equipped with?
VAZ 2106 is considered a logical continuation of the entire product line of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. In particular, the "six" is a modernized version of the VAZ 2103. The sixth model of the "Lada" was produced in the period from 1976 to 2006.
VAZ 2106 is one of the most popular domestic cars, more than 4.3 million cars were produced in total.
Over the years, the "six" has undergone some changes - for example, the engineers of the manufacturing plant experimented with power units to give the car dynamism and power. In all years, the VAZ 2106 was equipped with a four-stroke, carburetor, in-line engine.

The engines of the sixth model are characterized by the same characteristics as for previous versions: the camshaft is located in the upper part of the device, rubbing mechanisms are lubricated in two ways - under pressure and through splashing. Lubrication is consumed quite quickly with this method of supply: the plant has established an allowable rate of 700 grams per 1000 kilometers of track, but in reality, oil consumption may be higher.
Oils of both domestic and foreign manufacturers are poured into VAZ 2106 engines, it is important to use the following types of oils:
- 5W - 30;
- 5W - 40;
- 10W - 40;
- 15W - 40.
In working order, there should be no more than 3.75 liters of oil in the engine cavity and in the entire lubrication system of the car. When changing fluid, it is recommended to fill in 3 liters.
The main technical characteristics of the "six" engine
As mentioned above, the VAZ 2106 power unit is the result of the revision of the VAZ 2103 engine. The purpose of this refinement is clear - the engineers were trying to increase the power and dynamics of the new model. The result was achieved by increasing the cylinder bore up to 79 mm. In general, the new engine is no different from the VAZ 2103 engine.
On the "six" engines, the pistons have the same design as on the previous models: their diameter is 79 mm, while the nominal stroke of the piston is 80 mm.
The crankshaft was also taken from the VAZ 2103, the only difference is that the crank was increased by 7 mm, which is dictated by an increase in the diameter of the cylinders. In addition, the length of the crankshaft was also increased and amounted to 50 mm. Due to the increase in the size of the crankshaft and cylinders, it was possible to make the model more powerful: the crankshaft rotates at maximum loads at a speed of up to 7 rpm.
Since 1990, all VAZ 2106 models have been equipped with Ozone carburetors (until this period, Solex carburetors were used). Carbureted powertrains allow you to create a car with maximum vitality and productivity. In addition, at the time of release, the carburetor models were considered very economical: prices for the AI-92 were quite affordable.
All models of "six" carburetors since 1990 have a working volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 75 horsepower (74.5 hp). The device does not have large dimensions: it has a total width of 18.5 cm, a length of 16 cm, a height of 21.5 cm. The total weight of the entire mechanism assembly (without fuel) is 2.79 kg. Overall dimensions of the entire motor are 541 mm wide, 541 mm long and 665 mm high. The VAZ 2106 engine assembly weighs 121 kg.
The working life of the engines on the VAZ 2106, according to the manufacturer's data, does not exceed 125 thousand kilometers, however, with careful maintenance of the power unit and periodic cleaning of the carburetor, it is quite possible to extend this period to 200 thousand kilometers and more.
Where is the engine number
An important identification characteristic of any motor is its number. On the VAZ 2106, the number is knocked out in two places at once (for the convenience of the driver and supervisory authorities):
- On the left side of the cylinder block.
- On a metal plate under the hood.
The engine number is assigned at the factory, corrections and interruptions of numbers in the number are not allowed.
What engine can be put on the VAZ 2106 instead of the standard one
The main advantage of the "six" is its versatility. Owners of domestic cars VAZ 2106 can tune both the engine and the body practically without restrictions.
Domestic options
Power units from any VAZ models can ideally suit the VAZ 2106. However, do not forget that the replacement motor must be of the same dimensions, weight and approximately the same power as the standard one - this is the only way to safely and efficiently change the engine without any alterations.
The best options for replacement are AvtoVAZ engines:
- VAZ 2110;
- VAZ 2114;
- "Lada Priora";
- "Lada Kalina".
The main advantage of such a replacement is the ease of registering a car with a new engine in the traffic police. You only have to provide a new identification number, as the manufacturer will remain the same.
Engine from a foreign car
To increase the power of the "six", you will have to find more "serious" types of engines. Without changing the engine space in the car, engines from Nissan or Fiat can be installed on the VAZ 2106.
From European ones, the Fiat 1200 ohv engine will stand up as a native. Changes at least.
However, this power may not be enough for fans of "thrill". On the VAZ 2106, the engine from BMW 326, 535 and 746 models will easily "get up". However, it should be borne in mind that with an increase in power, it will be necessary to strengthen the entire structure of the car as a whole. Accordingly, investments will be required to strengthen the suspension, brakes, branching in the cooling system, etc.
Diesel engine for VAZ 2106
It was advisable to install diesel power plants on domestic gasoline cars several years ago, when the cost of diesel fuel was lower than AI-92. The main advantage of a diesel engine is its economy. Today, the cost of diesel fuel exceeds the price of gasoline, so there can be no talk of any economy.
However, fans of increased engine thrust can easily install various diesel units on the VAZ 2106. Three rules must be observed:
- The dimensions and weight of the diesel engine should not greatly exceed the weight of the standard VAZ engine.
- Engines with a power of more than 150 hp cannot be put on the "six". without the corresponding alteration of the body and other systems.
- Make sure in advance that all vehicle systems will be safely connected to the new engine.
Is it worth installing a rotary engine
Today, only Mazda uses rotary engines to power its cars. At one time, AvtoVAZ also produced rotary-piston motors, however, due to the problematic nature of the device, it was decided to stop equipping cars with such installations.
Installing a Mazda rotary engine on a VAZ 2106 will not allow you to do without intervention: you will need to expand the engine compartment and refine a number of systems. If desired and the availability of funds, all these tasks are feasible, but it is more advisable to install an engine with Fiat, for example, since with a small investment it will give the car the same speed characteristics.
Thus, the VAZ 2106 engine can be replaced both with a similar one from other VAZ models, and with an imported one from more powerful foreign cars. In any case, it is necessary to approach the replacement of the power unit as responsibly as possible - after all, if the connection is incorrect or the recommended rules are not followed, it will be unsafe to operate such a machine.
